We love pocket sandwiches here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, since they make for wonderful frozen snacks. Amy’s Kitchen has a few of these scrumptious little devils in their frozen food lineup, including the Cheese Pizza in a Pocket Sandwich, which we enjoyed quite a bit. So we had high hopes for the spinach-filled version of this meal, Amy’s Spinach Pizza in a Pocket Sandwich. We weren’t disappointed.
Based on our history with similar items, we expected to have to wrap this in a paper towel before heating. That’s not the case here — simply throw it seam-side-down onto a plate, heat it in the microwave for a minute, flip it, and heat it for another minute. There’s no fuss and it’s ready in no time. Of course, even after the brief cook time, this still comes out piping hot, so be careful.
We love the crust that Amy’s Kitchen tends to use for these types of items. It has a hint of sweetness to it, and the powdery finish makes it really pleasant to eat. We were a bit worried that it might get kind of soggy in the microwave, but it comes out pretty much perfect. Of course, if you’re hoping for a crispy crust, you’ll want to heat it in either an oven or a toaster oven. The microwave won’t give this even the faintest of crisp.
Inside that tasty shell is a pretty solid mix of ingredients. There’s the spinach, of course, which contributes its earthy flavor to the mix. There’s also some tomato purée and a good amount of cheese — both mozzarella and feta. While it does have a slightly mediterranean vibe, it’s the pizza that comes through the strongest. This is definitely a pizza pocket first and a spinach and feta sandwich second.
With the Spinach Pizza in a Pocket Sandwich, Amy’s Kitchen has a real winner on their hands. Of course, this sandwich is pretty small, so it’s better as a snack than as a full meal, so keep that in mind when heating one up. Either way, though, this is one tasty pizza pocket!
