Eating Well Indian Inspired Chicken Review

Eating Well Indian Inspired Chicken

Eating Well’s frozen meals always look so appetizing. Every box has a window to let you see how tightly this food is sealed, undoubtedly keeping it supremely fresh. They’ve even trademarked the term Fresh-Seal™ to really drive this idea home. Unfortunately, this seldom works as well in practice as it does in concept, and we’d hesitate to use the word fresh when describing any Eating Well meal.

The Indian Inspired Chicken doesn’t suffer as badly as some of Eating Well’s other meals — for one, it’s not all smashed down like an elephant stepped on it — but it still doesn’t do enough to rise to excellence.

The white meat chicken is really good for a frozen meat. While many chicken dinners end up with dry, tasteless chicken, this is both juicy and flavorful. There’s a good amount of it too.

There are plenty of veggies in here as well. From peas to red peppers to cauliflower, there’s a lot to munch on. They taste pretty good too. While we wouldn’t exactly call them fresh, everything is rich in flavor and none of it is soggy or dry or anything like that. All of this sits on top a bed of brown rice, which is pretty nondescript (as brown rice tends to be).

The real bummer here is the curry sauce. It smells amazing — seriously, our stomachs were growling like crazy when we pulled this out of the microwave and took a whiff — but it doesn’t taste anything like it smells. In fact, there’s barely a flavor at all. There’s a little bit of spice to it, but it doesn’t really hit you until a few seconds have gone by, and even then it’s more of a ghost of a true spice. If the flavor would have had that same creamy, spicy-yet-sweet quality the scent did, this would have been a phenomenal Indian dish. But sadly, the taste can’t live up to that otherworldly smell.

Eating Well’s Indian Inspired Chicken isn’t horrible; it’s just a bit bland and not very filling. But there are far too many better frozen Indian dishes out there to spend any time with this one. Instead, try Amy’s Indian Mattar Tofu or just about anything by Tandoor Chef.
