Smart Ones Breakfast Quesadilla Review

Smart Ones Breakfast Quesadilla

Breakfast is, as they say, the most important meal of the day. So when you’re picking out a breakfast food, it’s probably good if you choose one that’s relatively healthy, right?

It’s a good thing, then, that the Smart Ones frozen food line includes breakfast items like the Breakfast Quesadilla. Since this is a Weight Watchers product, it has a SmartPoints value printed right on the box where it’s easy to find. Each quesadilla is valued at 7 SmartPoints, and there are two quesadillas per box.

Now, even though each quesadilla is considered a single serving, both are enclosed in the same package.

Inside that package you’ll also find two crisping sleeves — or “quesadilla sleeves,” as the box calls them — to keep your quesadillas from getting too soggy in the microwave. If you follow the instructions to the letter, you’ll put the round edge of the quesadilla facing the easy-open tab. You can see what we mean in the image below.

If you’re careful enough and you only tear the packaging open on one end, you can slide the second quesadilla into its sleeve, then slide the whole thing back into the package.

It’s not as elegant a solution as we’d like — we’d prefer these to be individually wrapped — but it works well enough.

After all that work, this should thankfully only take about two minutes to cook. It’s a good thing, because you might be pretty hungry by this point and the last thing you need is to have to wait for a long cook time.

When we first saw it, we thought the perforated easy-open tab was kind of unnecessary, but the quesadilla has a tendency to stick to the sleeve, so the tab is actually pretty convenient here. Without it, we might have destroyed the quesadilla when we tried to get it out of the sleeve.

So is this sleeve worth all the fuss? Well, the quesadilla won’t get crispy like a restaurant quesadilla would, but it prevents some of the extra sog factor that plagues microwaved food. And there’s just a little tiny bit of crisp on the corners, so we guess it’s as much a success as we should reasonably expect.

The thing that surprised us the most is that the cheese here — a blend of part-skim mozzarella and reduced-fat cheddar — isn’t stretchy, like what you’d expect from a quesadilla. Instead, it’s more of a creamy cheese sauce. It’s not bad — in fact, it’s pretty tasty — but it’s certainly not what we expected.

It’s a good thing the cheese has a lot of flavor, because the egg content is virtually flavorless. It’s also a little soggier than we’d expect eggs to be, but it does give the whole thing a much-needed solid base. The overall consistency still remains on the wet, squishy side though.

The turkey bacon comes in small, square chunks, though it seems more like a sausage than a bacon. It is more chewy than a sausage, but it just doesn’t taste that much like bacon. It’s okay, though, because it doesn’t taste bad or anything. It’s just a strange choice when a turkey sausage would have been almost exactly the same thing.

There are bell peppers in the mix, but we’re not sure you’ll even notice they’re in there at all. The portion seems pretty scant.

The Smart Ones Breakfast Quesadilla is actually pretty tasty. Of course, the vast majority of that is simply because the cheese sauce is good. The rest of the meal is pretty hit or miss, but that doesn’t matter much when the bulk of the flavor comes from that yummy cheese sauce. Each quesadilla only has 230 calories (70 from fat), but these are small enough that you’re definitely going to want to consider eating two at once.
