Kashi’s line of frozen foods includes a wide range of Central American-inspired dishes. Their Sweet Potato Quinoa Bowl is a great example of what to expect from their line — lightweight meals filled with ingredients you’d expect to find south of Mexico. So we were pretty excited to try the Mayan Harvest Bake Bowl.
Of course, we should have looked more closely. Once we got this out of the package, we realized that this is simply the meal that was renamed to the Amaranth Polenta Plantain Bowl, and we’ve already reviewed this one. While we feel a bit silly about this, we also can’t complain about getting to eat this again. It’s pretty great.
As we said in our review of the Amaranth Polenta Plantain Bowl, what makes this meal tick is the high-quality ingredients. From the plantains that feel baked rather than microwaved to the soft-yet-still-a-tiny-bit-crunchy pumpkin seeds, this dish really shows how carefully Kashi picks their ingredients.
This meal is spicy enough to clear out the sinuses a bit, but it’s not spicy enough to send you running off to find something to numb the pain inside your mouth. That is to say its spice level is just about perfect.
Now, we should mention that this comes out of the microwave way hotter than we expected. You’ll want to give this some cool time before you dig in. You might not expect that, because at the two-and-a-half-minute mark — when you’re asked to take it out of the microwave to stir — it still seems mostly frozen. Don’t be fooled; this comes out piping hot.
While it’s not pretty to look at, Kashi’s Mayan Harvest Bake Bowl is a great-tasting, lightweight meal for fans of Caribbean dining. It’s also vegan-friendly. What more could you ask for?
