Sometimes, all you want is a nice barbeque chicken meal with a side of cheesy potatoes. With the Chicken in Sweet BBQ Sauce, Lean Cuisine attempts to satisfy that exact craving.
This is not a complex meal by any means. As part of Lean Cuisine’s Comfort line, this is really just supposed to be the sort of hearty meal that Mom used to make for you. If you really want to pretend this is one of those home-cooked meals, there are oven directions on the back of the box. We decided to stick with the microwave directions, of course.
There seems to be quite a bit of BBQ sauce here to cover just a few skimpy pieces of chicken. There’s enough sauce for twice this much chicken. While we appreciate the large helping of sauce, we certainly wouldn’t have minded a few more pieces of chicken to eat it with.
As far as flavor goes, the bbq sauce is delicious. It has a sweet, tangy flavor and it pairs well with the chicken. The chicken, however, could have been better. It’s a little gristly and kind of watery. The BBQ sauce definitely helps it out, but we can’t help but imagine how great this would have tasted with a slightly higher-quality meat.
The potato portion is considerably larger than the chicken portion here, so it is a substantial part of this meal. These potatoes taste like there’s something wrong with them. They have sort of a burned plastic flavor to them, which is pretty gross. The cheese is soupy and dull, so it doesn’t make the potatoes any better. You’ll definitely want to wash these down with a big glass of milk to get the taste out of your mouth.
This is a surprisingly low-calorie meal, at only 280 calories (70 from fat). It does have a substantial 720 mg of sodium, however, so be careful if you’re trying to watch your sodium. This is also gluten-free, so this should be fine to eat if you’re avoiding gluten.
Lean Cuisine’s Chicken in Sweet BBQ Sauce is not a dish we’d recommend. While the sauce is great, it’s not enough to make up for how disappointing the rest of this meal is.
