Fettuccine alfredo isn’t always the leanest meal, so we really do appreciate when a frozen food manufacturer decides to make one. This is why we were curious to see how the Smart Ones Fettuccine Alfredo would taste.
This is a lightweight dish at only 250 calories (and only 35 from fat). As a Weight Watchers product, this has a SmartPoints value printed on the side of the box — it’s valued at 7 SmartPoints. Plus, it only has 390 mg of sodium, which is quite low for a frozen food.
All signs are pointing to a winner so far. So the big question, then, is how is it?
Well, for starters, it comes out of the microwave looking quite a bit less appetizing than the picture on the box. The sauce has a graininess to it, as opposed to that smooth, creamy sauce on the packaging.
The sauce also doesn’t have a lot of flavor. While alfredo sauce tends to be one of the more subtle sauces, this is bland even for an alfredo. That means the broccoli has to do a lot of heavy lifting to save this from the flavorless blahs.
Thankfully, this is great broccoli. It tastes fresh, and it’s soft around the edges with a crisp firmness in the center. A soggy, mushy broccoli would have really ruined this dish, but this broccoli is great.
The Smart Ones Fettuccine Alfredo is a so-so pasta dish for those looking to cut some calories. It’s a little dull, but there’s some killer broccoli to give it a little oomf. If you’re willing to consume something a bit heavier, you might want to try the Stouffer’s Fettuccini Alfredo instead. But if you really can’t spare the calories, this frozen meal will do in a pinch.
