Wicked Kitchen Buffalo Inspired Chicken Hand Pie Review

Wicked Kitchen Buffalo Inspired Chicken Hand Pie

We’ve had the pleasure of trying out a few of Wicked Kitchen’s meals now, and for the most part we’ve been impressed. So when we found the Wicked Kitchen Buffalo Inspired Chicken Hand Pie, we were curious to find out how it tastes. After all, we are pretty big fans of buffalo chicken here at Freezer Meal Frenzy — or, at least our non-vegetarian staffers are.

The cooking instructions for this meal are a little strange (though that’s something we’re getting used to as we get more familiar with Wicked Kitchen’s meals). You just throw the whole box into the microwave, heat it up for two and a half to three and a half minutes, then unpack it to see what’s inside. You might be surprised to find what looks to be a bag of space food in the box.

Be careful with this inner bag; it’s quite hot when it first comes out of the microwave. We don’t want any of our lovely readers to end up burning themselves. Once you get the bag cracked open, you’ll finally get to the half-circle hand pie inside. You might also call it a smile or a D shape. Take your pick.

The crust tastes phenomenal — it has a great flavor with subtle hints of sweetness to it. The crust is also dry and crumbly, but in the best possible way. We’ve said this before, but Wicked Kitchen really pours their heart and soul into their hand pie crust.

But the filling leaves something to be desired. It’s a fine filling — creamy buffalo sauce with a spicy kick to it — but there’s just not enough of it. There’s hardly any chicken as well. We cracked ours open and only counted three pieces of the stuff. This chicken tastes halfway decent on its own, but it’s really intended to be a protein base for the buffalo sauce.

But this stingy sauce portion just leaves you feeling a bit empty — and we’re sure the hand pie itself feels empty as well. When you look at a cross section, the whole thing looks deflated.

This is no diet-friendly meal at 490 calories. It’s also got 1,180 mg of sodium, which is enough to send your sodium levels through the roof. If you’re trying to avoid excessive amounts of sodium, you’re going to want to stay away from this meal. Since this is a pretty small meal, it probably won’t fill you up either. So all that sodium and all those calories probably only account for a partial meal, since you’ll likely eat something else alongside this hand pie.

The Wicked Kitchen Buffalo Inspired Chicken Hand Pie tastes great, but the filling portion is absurdly stingy. We’re guessing Wicked Kitchen was forced into this in order to keep the whole thing under 500 calories, but it’s really disappointing — especially when the box shows a hand pie that’s jammed full of the delicious buffalo chicken filling.
