InnovAsian Cuisine Chicken Egg Rolls Review

InnovAsian Cuisine Chicken Egg Rolls

InnovAsian Cuisine puts out some pretty high-quality frozen Asian food. Their Vegetable Fried Rice is a great base for any Asian-style protein, and their General Tso’s Chicken is possibly the best we’ve ever had. So we had high expectations for the InnovAsian Chicken Egg Rolls, and even so, we found ourselves impressed.

First of all, we need to point out that a box contains five egg rolls, and that every egg roll is individually wrapped. This means you can enjoy however many you want (from one to five) without the hassle of using a bag clip or any other inconvenient bag-closing method for the leftovers.

And even better, these also come with some dipping sauces. Inside the box you’ll find two packets each of sweet and sour sauce and hot mustard. Clearly, InnovAsian wants your egg roll experience to be as authentic as possible.

There are several options for cooking these, but not all of them are equal. Microwave instructions are listed on the box, but they come with a warning that your egg rolls probably won’t get crispy when cooked that way. We love crispy egg rolls, so we opted for the oven instructions. This had us preheat the oven to 375 degrees fahrenheit, then place the egg rolls on a cookie sheet and pop them into the oven. Cook for 11 minutes, then flip them over and cook for 11 more.

In the meantime, you can thaw out your sauces in a cup or bowl of warm water so they’re ready to go when the egg rolls come out of the oven.

This is the only cooking method we tried, because our first batch came out of the oven pretty much perfect. They have a bit of a crisp on the outside, with a nice moist batch of filling inside.

The shells are amazing. Not only do they have a nice crisp, which we already mentioned, but they have a croissant-like flavor that’s irresistible.

The filling is amazing as well. It’s your typical blend of cabbage, onions, and carrots, though the carrots are cooked to perfection. They have just a slight amount of crunch to them with all the flavor of delicious cooked carrots. There’s also white meat chicken, which doesn’t really do a whole lot here except add a little protein. The chunks are quite small, and it’s unlikely you’ll even taste them unless you pick them out and eat them separately.

The sauces are good too. We’re especially fond of the sweet and sour sauce, which we find to be the best possible topper for a tasty egg roll. We’re typically not huge fans of hot mustard, but we tried some anyway, and this is the sort of spicy that really knocks you on your butt. It has a wasabi-like kick that invades your whole sinus cavity. It’s really not for us, but we’re sure that fans of hot mustard are going to really enjoy this stuff.

One egg roll has 140 calories, though you’ll want to add an additional 20 or so if you plan on using a sauce. We found two egg rolls to be a pretty ideal serving size, so even with sauce that only comes out to about 320 calories in total. Not bad. Of course, this being an Asian frozen food, the sodium level is pretty high, at 510 mg. That means a two-egg-roll serving contains 1,020 mg of sodium. Ouch!

The InnovAsian Cuisine Chicken Egg Rolls are more than just a food; they’re an experience. Everything you need for a pretty-darn-authentic-tasting Asian meal is included in the box, so these are both convenient and delicious. We feel pretty confident in saying you’ll probably really enjoy these.
