Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Baked Ziti with Mozzarella & Grana Cheese Review

Trader Joe's Reduced Guilt Baked Ziti with Mozzarella & Grana Cheese

If you’ve read a lot of Freezer Meal Frenzy reviews, you’ve probably noticed that our staffers love their carbs. We enjoy all kinds of pasta dishes, from a creamy macaroni and cheese to a rich baked ziti. While pasta isn’t always diet-friendly, we’ve managed to find quite a few low-calorie options. Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Baked Ziti clocks in at 320 calories, and it’s a fairly tasty meal.

If you’re expecting this ziti to set your world on fire, you’re going to be disappointed. It’s not on par with homemade ziti, and it doesn’t compare to the best pasta dishes we’ve tried. However, if you’re looking for a way to eat ziti without breaking your diet, this meal definitely delivers.

Our favorite part of the dish was actually the ziti itself. The ziti is made with durum wheat and is enriched with iron and folic acid. The texture of the pasta is a perfect al dente; it definitely tastes like it was freshly prepared. The pasta also has a little more flavor to it than ordinary pasta does.

The other ingredients are a little less interesting. We found the tomato sauce to be a little bland — it could have used some oregano or thyme to give it some pep. The meal also cuts calories by reducing the cheese content of the dish. We would have loved a little more mozzarella or Parmesan.

Even though Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Baked Ziti won’t blow you away, we found it to be pretty enjoyable. We appreciate that the meal is meat-free, and we love that the meal is nutrient rich. If you’re a fan of diet-friendly pasta dishes, you should look for this frozen meal the next time you’re at Trader Joe’s.
