Trader Joe’s Fettuccine with Mushrooms Review

Trader Joe's Fettuccine with Mushrooms

Trader Joe’s has quite the lineup of frozen pasta. We’ve been impressed with may of their several iterations of gnocchi, as well as their Penne Arrabbiata and their Reduced Guilt Spinach & Cheese Stuffed Shells. So far Trader Joe’s pasta has had a pretty good run here at Freezer Meal Frenzy.

So of course we were pretty excited when we picked up a bag of the Trader Joe’s Fettuccine with Mushrooms. Everybody on the Freezer Meal Frenzy staff is pretty much obsessed with mushrooms, so we were expecting quite the satisfying treat.

When we cracked open the bag, we found two components inside: there were balls of pasta, which the bag refers to as “pasta nests,” and then there were square-shaped chunks of frozen sauce. We thought they make quite a cute couple!

Cooking this meal is fairly straightforward. Simply heat up some water in a pan, then toss in the contents of the pan. Cover the pan while everything is cooking, but make sure you flip the pasta nests over about halfway through. If they’re not flipped, they don’t break apart the way they should, but as long as you remember the flipping part everything should turn out just fine.

This dish is actually pretty simple. It’s just a ribbon pasta with a mushroom-based sauce and some additional mushrooms tossed in for good measure. It doesn’t have an ingredients list that’s dozens of items long, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

Trader Joe's Fettuccine with Mushrooms

If you can’t get enough mushrooms, this is a dish you’re going to love, as it’s loaded with mushroomy flavor. There are both champignon and porcini mushrooms in the mix, though we wouldn’t say there are a ton of either. The sauce contains porcini mushroom extract, so every single bite will taste of mushrooms.

One of the benefits of such a simple dish is that it can be added on to. While it’s tasty as is, we also think it’s fun to experiment with proteins in this dish. For example, sausage is a fine addition here.

Now, the package claims there are three servings inside, but we’d argue that this feels more like two. One serving contains only 170 calories (40 from fat), so a full bag contains 510 calories, while our half-bag serving has 255. That’s really not bad at all. Of course, the sodium is a little worse. One serving is fine, with 510 mg of sodium, but that means the full package contains 1,530 mg, and our half-bag serving has 765 mg. If you stick with the suggested portion size, you’ll be fine, but anything more than that is a little on the high side.

Trader Joe’s Fettuccine with Mushrooms is a mushroom-lover’s delight. It’s an easy, simple, great-tasting way to enjoy the marvelous food known as the mushroom. We give this one an enthusiastic thumbs-up!

Unfortunately, Trader Giotto’s Fettuccine with Mushrooms has just been discontinued. I discovered that bad news earlier today when searching for it at my local TJ’s.

Yeah, we stopped going because of all the discontinued products. We only go maybe once every 3-4 months now…as opposed to every month
