Devour has a habit of knocking their frozen food selection completely out of the park. Some of our favorite frozen meals of all time come from Devour, like the Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese. Yet we’re still not 100% convinced that they belong in the frozen sandwich market. We did try their Buffalo Chicken Grilled Cheese, which is the sandwich version of the mac and cheese we love so much. While we enjoyed it for the most part, it had a few flaws that kept it from the level of perfection that a lot of their other frozen food items seem to maintain.
So we had mixed feelings about the Sweet & Smoky Pork Grilled Cheese sandwich when we first discovered it. On one hand, a BBQ pork sandwich sounds awesome, but on the other, we’re not sure Devour is the brand to pull it off. Of course, the only way to be certain about the quality of this meal is to try it for ourselves, so that’s what we did.
First off, this comes shrink wrapped in a neat little package that contains a crisping tray. Before you cook the sandwich, you’ll need to tear apart the box and fold it into a handy pedestal for the sandwich. We haven’t had much trouble with Devour’s boxes in the past, but this one was a bit finicky and it ended up tearing in the wrong place.
After getting all that set up, simply set the sandwich on your little pedestal, then stick the whole thing in the microwave for two minutes and 40 seconds.
Now, we need to point out here that this thing smells amazing. Your stomach will start growling before you even take this out of the microwave, as your kitchen will fill with the delicious scent of cooked pork. While it might be difficult to wait once you get a whiff of this thing, don’t be too hasty to pull it out of the microwave, as it comes out very hot. We don’t want our lovely readers to burn themselves!
We should also point out that while many other brands seem to do a halfway decent job with their crisping trays, Devour still struggles to keep their bread from getting a little bit soggy. It’s a shame, because this bread is otherwise ludicrously tasty. And since it’s so thick, it takes up a good amount of this sandwich’s physical size.
The stuff on the inside, though, is what really counts here. It features cubes of juicy, delicious pork cooked to perfection. The pork finds itself swimming among gobs of gooey cheese — a tasty blend of Monterey jack and cheddar. Then, of course, is the BBQ sauce, which gives this the “sweet and smoky” flavor advertised on the box. To top it all off, there are little chunks of jalapeño in the mix to spice thing up a bit.
We probably don’t even need to say this, but this sandwich tastes incredible.
Devour isn’t known for low-calorie meals, and this one contains 510 calories (170 from fat), so it’s clearly not designed for hardcore dieters. The sodium level isn’t too terrible, at 670 mg. That’s a little high for a normal meal, but it’s slightly under the average for a frozen food.
The Devour Sweet & Smoky Pork Grilled Cheese sandwich is delicious. We just wish the bread turned out a little better, because the flavor here is incredible. Perhaps a toaster oven would be a better cooking method for this particular sandwich. As is, it’s an incredibly tasty sandwich that suffers a bit too much from SBS (Soggy Bread Syndrome).
