The Stouffer’s Harvest Apples caught us by surprise. What is this, we asked ourselves, a hot meal simply consisting of apples and cinnamon? It’s a bit like an apple pie without the crust, isn’t it? So we decided we had to take one home and try it out.
There’s really not much too this dish, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You don’t need a paragraph-long list of ingredients to make a good meal. Some of the best meals are just a few things tossed into a bowl together. If you don’t believe us, just ask anyone who loves salads.
But we digress. This review is about apples, not salads, and continuing down this road would be like comparing apples to… well, nevermind.
This apple-filled dish needs to cook in the microwave for five minutes. This is enough time for the apple goo to boil over and make a bit of a mess, as you can see in our picture below. The bright side of all this, of course, is that this tray is jam-packed with apple goodness. Stouffer’s did not waste any room in this tray.
So how does it taste? Well, in our intro paragraph we mentioned that we thought this was a bit like an apple pie without the crust, and we stand by that. Yet it’s not quite as sweet and it actually tastes kind of refreshing. When we first saw the packaging, we thought of this as a fall dish, but now that we’ve tasted it, it reminds us more of spring. Diehard fans of apple pie might actually miss the crust, but we thought these apples were just fine on their own.
Now, this does also contain some soybean oil, bleached wheat flour, cornstarch, and ascorbic acid, so it’s not quite as healthy as plain cinnamon apples would be, so keep that in mind if you pick one of these up.
The packaging says there is only 190 calories in a serving of this stuff, but keep in mind that there are two servings per package. That puts this at 380 calories instead of the more reasonable 190 advertised on the box. We’ve gone on long rants about this type of deceptive advertising before, so we won’t do that here.
The Stouffer’s Harvest Apples is a strange frozen food. We hesitate to call it a meal, though it is pretty filling. You could probably make something very similar to this in a pretty short amount of time, only your homemade version wouldn’t contain all the artificial ingredients. Don’t get us wrong here, this tastes great — we’re just not sure who the target audience would be for something like this.
