Sweet Earth Mayan Burrito Review

Sweet Earth Mayan Burrito

When we think about the Mayans, we usually think of advanced calendar systems and ceremonial pyramids before we think of burritos. Thankfully, Sweet Earth has never been afraid to experiment with burrito fillings. The Sweet Earth Mayan Burrito contains a number of ingredients that were staples of Mayan cuisine, including black beans, chili peppers, and Cotija cheese.

Sweet Earth provides microwave instructions for their burritos, but we prefer to heat them in the oven. It took about 40 minutes to cook this burrito, but we were confident it would be worth the wait by the time we sliced it open. It has a strong, savory smell with hints of hints of jalapeño. Once we got our first whiff, we knew we were in for a treat.

Sweet Earth describes their salsa as “tangy,” but we’d place it firmly in the spicy category. This burrito has quite a bit of heat, and the other ingredients don’t do much to cool it down. Even though Cotija cheese is mentioned on the label, we didn’t notice any cheese crumbles. The fire roasted peppers tomatoes and jalapenos really dominated this meal.

That said, this burrito definitely isn’t boring. There are a lot of interesting textures going on here; we really like the way the savory grounds blend with the brown rice and black beans. The spiciness can be a little overpowering, but there are some interesting aftertastes here. The sweet-yet-peppery flavor of the purple cabbage brings this meal together and keeps it from feeling like a pepper extravaganza.

As fans of spicy food, our staffers love the Sweet Earth Mayan Burrito. It has plenty of fiery flavor, but it also has unique ingredients you wouldn’t expect in a burrito. At just 270 calories (with 13 grams of protein), the meal is also a fantastic option for dieters. Studies have found that spicy ingredients can keep you feeling full for longer, which means this small burrito should be able to tide you over until your next meal rolls around.
