Healthy Choice Turkey Sausage & Egg White Scramble Review

Healthy Choice Turkey Sausage & Egg White Scramble

Healthy Choice’s frozen food has been a little hit or miss with us. While we appreciate their efforts to make low-calorie versions of the meals we love, these meals don’t always turn out as good as they sound in theory. So we weren’t quite sure what to expect when we picked up the Healthy Choice Turkey Sausage & Egg White Scramble.

We did have one positive experience with a Healthy Choice breakfast bowl in the past, but the particular frozen meal we’re reviewing today has incredibly low customer reviews. Customers refer to this meal as “disgusting” and claim that it “tasted like cardboard,” and one person even said, ” I thought I was going to get sick.” While we don’t always share the opinions of the majority (some of our reviews have been a bit more controversial than we would have expected), the consistency in negative customer reviews here is not a good sign.

After pulling this out of the microwave, we immediately understood the complaints. This meal smells like the inside of a minnow bucket that’s been left out in the sun for too long. We can’t figure out what the source of that fishy smell is; this doesn’t contain anything we’d think of as being even remotely fishy. Our guess is that it comes from the greens — this contains chard, spinach, and kale. While we typically like those things, all of them can be screwed up pretty badly with careless preparation.

And that’s a smell that does carry over into the flavor. Sometimes, there are meals that smell weird yet taste perfectly fine; this is not one of those meals.

There are little chunks of turkey sausage in the bowl, as promised on the package, but these aren’t as exciting as they sound. They’re smaller than we hoped for — these seem like they’re more appropriately sized for a cheap pizza than a breakfast dish — and they’re quite rubbery. Chewing one of these sausage balls is an unpleasant experience, to say the least.

Egg whites are typically pretty bland, but these ones have a salty taste to them.  We’re not sure if these eggs were just naturally salty, if Healthy Choice added salt, or if they just absorb some salty flavor from something else in the dish, but no matter how they got that way, these are some salty eggs.

The box promises a creamy avocado sauce, which we were quite looking forward to. However, besides a barely discernible dab of the stuff, we didn’t really find any. This is the sort of ingredient that could have really turned the tide for this dish; there’s just not enough of it to make any sort of difference.

We do like the addition of steel-cut oats and quinoa, but like the avocado sauce, there’s just not enough of these ingredients. They add a nice texture that you probably won’t enjoy until you’ve reached the very bottom of the dish.

Now, it’s impossible to deny the diet-friendliness of this frozen breakfast. At only 190 calories, this is a truly lightweight breakfast item. It contains 600 mg of sodium, which is actually a bit lower than what we’d expect from your average frozen food.

The Healthy Choice Turkey Sausage & Egg White Scramble is not a good breakfast. It’s low in calories, but it also tastes like dirty fish. We don’t always agree with customer reviews, but this time, we think the negativity is a pretty apt way to feel about this dish.
