Trader Joe’s Harvest Spaghetti Squash Spirals Review

Trader Joe's Harvest Spaghetti Squash Spirals

Here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, we’ve really been enjoying Trader Joe’s fall seasonal items. The Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese is a must-try food for anyone who loves butternut squash, and the Cheesy Spaghetti Squash Casserole is a big meal that’s an even bigger hit. So when we discovered the Trader Joe’s Harvest Spaghetti Squash Spirals, we knew we had to try it as soon as possible.

While this dish isn’t too complicated, preparing it takes a few more steps than the typical Trader Joe’s frozen pasta meal. You can’t just open up a bag and dump it in a skillet. There’s a separate package of cheese that has to be set aside.

After the cheese has been removed, you can add the spaghetti squash spirals to a heated pan. The other ingredients have to stay into the bag until the spirals have thawed. Even with these extra steps, this is still a fast and easy meal; our dish took about 10 minutes to prepare.

As you can see in the image below, there’s not a ton of food in this bag. Trader Joe’s claims that there are three servings per package, but realistically, this isn’t going to feed more than one person. We can stretch most of their pasta dishes into two meals, but this helping of food is just too small.

Even though the portion size isn’t that substantial, this meal is very tasty. We were a little worried that the squash spirals would be mushy, but they actually have a very pleasant texture. It’s certainly softer than normal pasta, but it isn’t overly pulpy. The large chunks of butternut squash are fairly firm, which creates an appealing contrast.

We were a little surprised by the taste of the seasonal tomato sauce; we couldn’t really taste the tomato in it at all. After reading the label, we realized that the sauce was made with pumpkin puree. This meal is loaded with squash, but we don’t have any complaints about that! The firm, milky chunks of grana padano cheese bring everything together nicely.

This meal was definitely designed with squash lovers in mind. While the combination of spaghetti squash, butternut squash, and pumpkin will be a little much for some, it’s a blend that we really enjoyed. As long as you’re not put off by the small portions, Trader Joe’s Harvest Spaghetti Squash Spirals make for a terrific fall meal.

Please note this is NOT a vegetarian dish. There is Animal Rennet in this item. I’m disappointed in that.
