Devour Turkey and Bacon with Ranch Grilled Cheese Review

Devour Turkey and Bacon with Ranch Grilled Cheese

If you’re a regular reader of Freezer Meal Frenzy, then you’re probably aware of our longstanding love for Devour’s frozen foods. While there are a few items that we just don’t care for in the Devour lineup, the brand also makes some of our all-time favorites. So we’re always excited to try a new Devour product.

Today we’re checking out the Devour Turkey and Bacon with Ranch Grilled Cheese sandwich.

Now, Devour’s frozen sandwiches tend to be just okay — they often have high-quality ingredients, but the fact that bread doesn’t heat well in microwaves often gets in the way. So we expected that to be the case here too. This does come with a crisping tray and a foldable box, which are supposed to keep the sogginess down, but crisping trays can only do so much for bread as thick as the stuff Devour uses in their sandwiches.

It’s hard to fault Devour here, because the bread is lovely. It’s thick, rich, and great-tasting. Unfortunately, the microwave isn’t kind to it, and it ends up a bit soggy and extremely sticky to the touch. Someday, we’d love to try cooking one of these sandwiches in a toaster oven, because we think that might fix this problem.

The stuff between the slices of bread, however, is where Devour really shows what it can do. The turkey is juicy and flavorful, and the Applewood smoked bacon gives it a smokey edge. Then, there’s the oh-so-gooey combination of sharp cheddar and mozzarella.

But this sandwich’s true claim to fame is its creamy ranch sauce. Now, we must point out that as midwesterners, the Freezer Meal Frenzy staff has a tendency to love ranch dressing more than anybody reasonably should. That said, we adore this ranch sauce. It’s a dreamy, creamy sauce that elevates this sandwich to a level that’s simply not possible without it.

Now, Devour tends to focus far more on flavor than on calories when they design their meals. This is great if you love great-tasting frozen meals, but it’s not so great if you’re on a diet. And this sandwich is no diet-friendly food. It contains 550 calories (210 from fat) and 750 mg of sodium. It’s also not all that filling. Definitely practice moderation if you plan on eating Devour frozen foods.

The Devour Turkey and Bacon with Ranch Grilled Cheese is a wonderful sandwich, though we wish the bread were a little less soggy. But as true lovers of ranch, we think this sandwich really hits the spot despite its one flaw — a flaw that might be mitigated with a non-microwave cook method.
