El Monterey Chicken & Monterey Jack Cheese Burrito Review

El Monterey Chicken & Monterey Jack Cheese Burrito

While we don’t expect gourmet-quality food from El Monterey, the brand does have a few frozen foods in their lineup that we quite enjoy. Their Charbroiled Chicken & Monterey Jack Cheese Quesadillas, for example, are surprisingly tasty. And, as it turns out, El Monterey makes a burrito that has several of the same ingredients as the quesadillas we just mentioned.

So today, we’re checking out the El Monterey Chicken & Monterey Jack Cheese Burrito. Our burrito came packed individually, but apparently these also come in a twelve-pack.

In the past, we’ve attempted to cook El Monterey burritos in the oven, and it just doesn’t seem to make a noticeable difference. So we just stuck this into the microwave for a minute and called it a day (the package recommends a minute and a half for a frozen burrito, but ours had thawed overnight in the fridge so we reduced the cook time to compensate).

When we cut this open, it “bled” cheese sauce all over our plate. As you can see from our image below, the monterey jack cheese sauce is kind of watery. It doesn’t taste horrible, but it is thin and runny rather that gooey and stretchy. It’s certainly not the ideal burrito cheese.

The rest of the filling is a mix of chicken and refried beans. Like the cheese, the bean mix is kind of watery. It’s not the thick paste of a typical frozen burrito; this is runny enough that it’s difficult to eat without a fork. And the chicken is almost not even there. We are very familiar with frozen burritos skimping on the meat portion, but we’ve had other burritos from El Monterey that had a generous helping of meat inside. The Shredded Steak & Three-Cheese Burrito comes to mind.

One burrito contains about 290 calories (80 from fat) and 450 mg of sodium. While that wouldn’t be bad in a filling meal, this is not filling in the slightest. We ate this as a side to a larger meal, and we were still hungry afterward. This is definitely not designed to satiate a big hunger.

The El Monterey Chicken & Monterey Jack Cheese Burrito is decent in that fast-food sort of way. It’s not going to impress anyone looking for quality, but it’s cheap and tastes reasonably good. It’s also small and loaded with calories. If you go in expecting about the same level of quality as a Taco Bell burrito, you probably won’t complain too much about this El Monterey frozen burrito.
