Funeral potatoes, a cheesy hash brown casserole that’s a midwest staple, have long been a guilty pleasure of ours. The rich, calorie-filled dish isn’t healthy by any standards, but it’s hard to deny its deliciousness. If you love this cheese-filled, creamy dish, and you’re seeking a healthier alternative, you should try Trader Joe’s Broccoli & Cauliflower Gratin. This Trader Joe’s dish doesn’t contain potatoes, but it absolutely qualifies as a comfort food.
While it does come with microwave instructions, we chose to heat this in the oven, and we’d recommend you do the same. It’s the kind of dish that’s designed to be baked. It takes a little while to heat up — about 25 minutes — but it’s tasty enough to justify the effort.
Our gratin looked a little sloppy when it came out of the oven, but we honestly didn’t care about that after we took our first bite. Both the broccoli and cauliflower are roasted, which makes them taste amazing. The vegetables are ensconced in a velvety sauce that consists of butter, mozzarella, and Grana Padano cheese. It’s an incredible mixture, and we savored every last bite.
Because the cauliflower is fairly tender, some of it wound up getting mashed as we stirred the dish. The resulting texture combination does a lot to enhance the dish. The combination of crunchy vegetables, a creamy cheese sauce, and mashed cauliflower is absolutely perfect.
We don’t eat a lot of funeral potatoes these days, but we definitely plan on eating Trader Joe’s Broccoli & Cauliflower Gratin again. It’s a rich, savory dish that’s absolutely perfect for a chilly day. Whether you’re serving this as a side or treating it like a full meal, this gratin is a real treat.
