The Freezer Meal Frenzy staff has no problems with garlic. It’s flavorful, it’s loaded with nutrients, and it helps keep vampires away. We usually welcome garlic in our meals. However, Trader Joe’s Garlic Potatoes with Parmesan Sauce proves that you can have too much of a good thing.
Like many of Trader Joe’s other frozen dishes, these potatoes are easy to cook. We followed the stovetop instructions and wound up with slightly brown potatoes in less than 10 minutes. Since these potatoes are designed to be a side dish rather than a full-course meal, you’ll probably want to cook them alongside something else.
The texture of the potatoes is perfect; they’re nice and soft with just a hint of crispiness. When it comes to flavor, however, there’s really only one thing you can taste: garlic. The garlic flavor is completely overwhelming, and when we bite into these potatoes, we can’t really taste anything else. The parmesan cheese sauce described on the bag is impossible to detect, and there are no other flavors that stand out.
Maybe a big bowl of potato-shaped garlic sounds appetizing to you, but it’s really not our thing. If there was a little less garlic, and maybe a few other spices, we would have been able to taste the potatoes and appreciate this dish for what it was. As is, it just left us with a raging case of garlic breath.
If you’re a huge garlic fan, you might like Trader Joe’s Garlic Potatoes with Parmesan Sauce. If, like us, you think garlic is better in small doses, you might want to pass on this and try one of Trader Joe’s other potato dishes instead.
