Lunds & Byerlys Potato Leek Soup Review

Lunds & Byerlys Potato Leek Soup

Potato leek soup is a classic Welsh dish; the leek is actually considered to be a symbol of Wales. Although the Freezer Meal Frenzy staffers have never visited Wales, we definitely have a soft spot for this hearty and comforting soup. When we saw the Lunds & Byerlys Potato Leek Soup in the freezer aisle at our local grocery store, we knew this was a dish we had to review.

If you’ve never heard of the Lunds & Byerlys brand, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve been living under a rock. This is the store brand for the Minnesota-based grocery store chain of the same name. Their selection of frozen items is impressive, and we’d definitely recommend checking them out if you’re in the Minnesota area!

Because this is a frozen soup, the cooking process is a little bit strange. The soup is enclosed in a plastic, and needs be thawed in either boiling water or the microwave. We opted to warm our soup in boiling water, and we found the process to be very easy. Once the soup was fully heated, we cut the bag open and squeezed the contents into a bowl.

If you’re looking for a creamy, flavorful, and comforting soup, this dish has you more than covered. The hearty taste of the potatoes combines beautifully with the onion-like flavor of the leeks. Cheeses, like fontina and asiago, add a little bit of richness to the otherwise simple flavor palette. This isn’t a complex soup, but that’s part of its appeal. It’s the perfect thing to eat on a chilly winter day.

Unfortunately, if you’re looking for substantial servings sizes, this soup probably isn’t going to please you. Even though it’s a 310 calorie soup, the portion you receive is pretty small. It feels more like a cup of soup to have on the side than a full meal.

The Lunds & Byerlys Potato Leek Soup is absolutely delicious, and we’d love to recommend it. It’s certainly the tastiest frozen soup we’ve tried. Unfortunately, this yummy little soup isn’t filling enough to justify purchasing. It’s a success on the flavor front, but that doesn’t mean it’s filling.
