Red’s Chicken & Cheddar Burrito Review

Red's Chicken & Cheddar Burrito

There’s nothing quite like a warm chicken burrito to fill the ol’ belly after a hard day’s work. Yes, we love chicken burritos here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, and we review them as often as we can. (Check out our review of the Evol Chicken Tikka Masala Burrito or the Trader Joe’s Chicken Chile Verde Burritos for a sampling of frozen chicken burrito reviews we’d done in the past.)

So when we spotted the Red’s Chicken & Cheddar Burrito, we knew we had to gobble it up as soon as possible.

Now, we have our own method for cooking burritos to make sure they come out just how we want them, but when it comes to Red’s burritos, we tend to follow the instructions that are printed on the packaging. These have some pretty complex instructions, and we wouldn’t want to mess up a perfectly good burrito.

So, first, you’ll want to preheat your oven to 375 degrees fahrenheit. When that’s close to being ready, pull your burrito out of the package and toss it, covered, into the microwave for about a minute. Then, put it onto a greased cookie sheet and pop it into the oven for about 12 to 14 minutes. Now, we should point out here that we felt like 14 minutes didn’t quite do the trick, so we stuck our back in the oven for a few extra minutes. And we’re glad we did.

So let’s talk about this cheese. This is an ooey-gooey, melty-welty blend of cheddar and mozzarella. It’s a little more on the gooey side than the melty side, and you can probably tell from the image above that the cheese was just a tad bit watery. It tastes pretty good, though, and it’s got some green chile pepper and red bell peppers mixed in to give it a little oomph.

The chicken is nothing special. While Red’s doesn’t skimp on the chicken content here, it doesn’t do as much for the flavor as the cheese and peppers do. In fact, we would have actually been perfectly fine without the chicken here (and we say that as lovers of chicken).

There’s a little bit of rice inside as well, though it keeps a low profile. We’re told you can also find some pinto beans inside, but we didn’t find any for ourselves. It’s possible they were just mashed up instead of whole, so they just blended into the cheese without us noticing — those sneaky little beans!

This burrito has 300 calories (80 from fat), which is a little more than we’d like to see in a burrito of this size. It also has 640 mg of sodium, which actually isn’t all that bad if you only eat one burrito. We think you’ll probably end up eating two, though.

The Red’s Chicken & Cheddar Burrito is a pretty decent frozen burrito, though it’s definitely not our new favorite. It’s hard to top Evol’s Sriracha Chicken Big Burrito, and this Red’s burrito didn’t stand a fighting chance.
