Breakfast can be a little bit tricky when you’re a vegetarian. So many breakfast staples, like bacon and sausage, are left by the wayside when you let go of meat. Thankfully, there are some excellent meat-free alternatives on the market, like Trader Joe’s Meatless Breakfast Patties. Although these patties do contain egg whites, they’re free of meat and other animal products.
We chose to cook these sausages in a skillet, and we found the process to be quick and fairly easy. That said, you’ll want to make sure you’re vigilant about flipping them as they cook. If you’re not careful, you wind up burning these patties before you ever get a chance to dig in. Luckily, if you flip them a few times, you’ll wind up with patties that look like this:
Once they’re heated up, you’ll find yourself with a delicious-smelling breakfast treat. There’s a slight smokiness to the flavor of these patties that we really enjoyed. While we offset some of that smokiness by dipping our patties in syrup, we also think they’d be great with ketchup, and they’re very tasty when eaten plain. If you have some small buns on hand, these patties would also make for a fantastic mini breakfast sandwich.
But are they a convincing substitute for patties made from real sausage? Surprisingly, they actually come pretty close. Our meat-eating staffers agree that they taste a lot like sausage, but say that they lack the gristle of real meal. If you’ve given up meat, but still have a hankering for sausage, these little patties just might leave you satisfied.
