Lunds & Byerlys Artisan Flatbread Sausage Pizza Review

Lunds & Byerlys Artisan Flatbread Sausage Pizza

There’s nothing quite like a tasty pizza on a cold weekend. Thankfully, Lunds & Byerlys, the Minnesota-based upscale chain of grocery stores, has some delicious pizzas in their frozen food lineup. Today, we’re very excited to be trying the Lunds & Byerlys Artisan Flatbread Sausage Pizza.

Now, the first thing that we should point out about this pizza is that it’s not nearly as big as it looks. The box is gigantic, so it takes up a good amount of room in the freezer, but once you remove all the cardboard and plastic wrap, this is only slightly larger than a personal-sized pizza.

We stuck this in the oven for about twenty minutes, then pulled it out and sliced it up “Minnesota-style.” (This is, apparently, a controversial thing to say, as square pizza slices are certainly not unique to Minnesota, but we like calling it that anyway.)

The crust is actually thicker than we were expecting. The term flatbread tends to conjure imagery of something much, well, flatter than this. However, this is also especially crispy — it’s probably much crispier than you’d expect from a flatbread pizza.

As far as toppings, this is exactly what we’d expect from a Minnesota pizza maker. This is loaded up with sauce to the point where it drizzles out the sides when you take a bite, and it has a little bit of spiciness to it (which is how we make our pizza sauce here in Minnesota). It also has nice round balls of tasty sausage.

And holy dear god, this cheese. This is pure mozzarella made from whole milk and given a little seasoned lovin’. It’s layered on pretty thick, and it’s perfect.

This pizza is no slouch in the calorie department. Lunds & Byerlys recommends eating half a pie as a serving, but that ends up being pretty small. It’s not an insurmountable feat to eat the whole thing in a sitting if you’re really hungry. A half pizza has 440 calories, which means the full thing has 880. Yikes! Even worse, a half pizza has 1,060 mg of sodium, so a full pizza has 2,120 mg. Geez Louise! This is a pizza that should be saved for special occasions.

We’d eat the Lunds & Byerlys Artisan Flatbread Sausage Pizza every day if it weren’t so loaded with calories. As is, we plan on enjoying it as an occasional, super-craveable treat. If you’re in the Minneapolis area and in the mood for a delicious sausage pizza , we recommend stopping into a L&B store and picking up one of these.
