Gardein Sweet and Tangy Barbeque Wings Review

Gardein Sweet and Tangy Barbeque Wings

This may come as a surprise to you, but our vegetarian staffers don’t eat a lot of barbecue wings (our carnivorous staffers do, of course). There aren’t many companies striving to create meat-free wings, but Gardein is looking to fill that niche. Unfortunately, the Gardein Sweet and Tangy Barbeque Wings could use some work.

Before you can prepare these wings, you have to thaw the BBQ sauce. This is a simple process that only takes a few minutes; all you have to do is place the sauce packet in a mug of hot water. Once that’s done, you can transfer the sauce to a bowl and start slathering the wings.

We struggled to evenly coat our wings as they cooked, but we made sure that each piece of faux chicken had plenty of sauce on it. We covered a baking sheet with aluminum foil, tossed them in the oven, and hoped they’d look better when the process was done. Spoiler alert: They didn’t.

Wings are a messy food by design, but these chunks of faux meat are especially sloppy. If we’re being honest, they look a little gross. As frozen food connoisseurs, we’re happy to dig in and try them anyway, but this isn’t something that you’ll want to serve to your friends. Unless you’re willing to get your hands dirty, you’re going to have to eat this with knife and fork.

The sweet and tangy sauce is delicious; it’s a flavorful sauce with just a hint of heat to it. The chick’n, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Some of Gardein’s products are pretty convincing, but this is really rubbery. It has an unpleasant barley aftertaste that makes it feel even less like chicken. If it wasn’t for the sauce, we wouldn’t want to eat this at all.

Gardein makes lots of excellent faux meat products, but this isn’t one of them. The barbecue sauce helps to savage this otherwise unappealing dish, but we still can’t recommend it. If you want a vegetarian-friendly alternative to wings, we’d actually suggest you try Trader Joe’s Kung Pao Cauliflower instead.
