We love eating freshly-made pastries, but making them isn’t always practical. We don’t always have time to knead dough or brush things with an egg wash. Thankfully, it’s easy to enjoy fresh-out-of-the-oven baked goods when products like Trader Joe’s Pastry Bites with Feta Cheese & Caramelized Onions.
Cooking these pastries in the oven is a little nerve-wracking. The bites come packaged in a black plastic tray, and they’re supposed to stay in that tray as they cook. We don’t necessarily feel great about throwing plastic in a 400 degree oven; we were worried that we’d end up with a melted mess. Thankfully, we avoided any mishaps and wound up with a perfectly cooked plate of pastries.
Even though these pastries cooked perfectly, they didn’t all turn out perfectly. The feta cheese is warm and soft, and the delicate pastry dough isn’t enough to contain it. A few of our bites held together, but our plate was pretty messy as a whole. These are a great snack, but they’re not really suitable for dinner guests you want to impress. (We’d love to suggest serving the adorable Dr. Praeger’s Broccoli Littles at your next dinner party, but they’re probably not appropriate for adults who are all fancied up.)
While our pastries may have looked messy, they were still incredibly tasty.
The oven-baked feta cheese is rich, but it’s also warm, gooey, and completely delicious. The light and soft dough is the perfect complement to the slightly sweet cheese, and the caramelized onions added some savory flavor to the mix. Although we had to eat these treats with a fork, these bites were a big hit with our staffers, and we polished off this plate in no time.
According to the package, one of these bites is considered a serving, and each bite contains 70 calories. That means that the two Freezer Meal Frenzy staffers who split the tray each consumed about 420 calories. You definitely won’t want to make a meal of these things.
Trader Joe’s Pastry Bites with Feta Cheese & Caramelized Onions might not look as pretty as they do on the box, but they’re a lot tastier than we expected. If you’re in the mood for an indulgent treat, and you’re willing to put plastic in your oven, then these pastries are something you’ll want in your freezer.
