Lean Cuisine Favorites Penne Rosa

The Lean Cuisine Penne Rosa isn’t new to us; we’ve already tried and reviewed it (it was pretty new back then). However, the last time we visited our freezer aisle, we noticed that Lean Cuisine had updated the packaging. We decided it was time for us to update our review as well.

As is the case with all of Lean Cuisine meals, cooking this dish up is basically effortless. Toss it in the microwave for a few minutes, give it a stir, let it cook for another minute or so, and it’s ready to eat. We don’t mind frozen meals that are a little more complex, but Lean Cuisine dishes are perfect for work lunches.

The last time we tried this dish, we wound up with some seriously watery sauce. We’re not sure what changed this time around — the ingredient list is identical — but this sauce is a little less soupy. There’s not a ton of sauce here, but the dish isn’t lacking in flavor, and none of the penne tastes plain.

The highlight of this meal is still the zucchini. It’s cooked to perfection here; it’s nice and tender, but still juicy. The sauce and cheese give it a little extra flavor, and it blends nicely with the pasta. Lean Cuisine is a little stingy with the mozzarella cheese, but we still felt like we had enough for our meal.

If you’ve tried Lean Cuisine Favorites Penne Rosa before, and found it to be disappointing, we recommend giving it a second chance. This meal still isn’t going to set your world on fire, but Lean Cuisine addressed the biggest complaint we had about the dish. At 270 calories, it’s a terrific lunch for anyone on a diet, especially vegetarians.
