Marie Callender’s Sweet & Spicy Chicken & Noodle Bowl Review

Marie Callender's Sweet & Spicy Chicken & Noodle Bowl

When it’s a chilly day and you’re feeling less-than-great, it’s nice to chow down on some chicken noodle soup. While the Marie Callender’s Sweet & Spicy Chicken & Noodle Bowl isn’t exactly a soup, we’d say it’s at least soup-adjacent. So today we’re testing out this noodle bowl to see how it is. (And we’ll point out that the weather is pretty crumby here, which makes this the exact sort of treat we’re craving today.

The Marie Callender’s Sweet & Spicy Chicken & Noodle Bowl is easy enough to heat up — simply pop it into the microwave and let it go — yet it takes more time than we were expecting. The box recommends between 5 1/2 and 7 1/2 minutes of cook time. You can also cook this in the oven, which takes even more time, but we didn’t have that sort of patience today and cooked this in the microwave. We started with six minutes to see how well this cooked through, and that seemed to do the trick. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions, check out our package scans at the bottom of this article.)

Now, we pointed out earlier that this isn’t a soup, since there’s no broth to speak of. Instead, this noodle bowl uses what we’d refer to as a glaze. You can see what we mean by that in the photo below.

As the title suggests, this glaze is both sweet and spicy. Of course, it definitely leans way harder into the sweet side of that than the spicy one. This shouldn’t be enough to scare off spice-ophobes, but it tastes lovely. It has an almost honey-like flavor to it (it’s actually a brown sugar-based mix), and it lends its sweetness to pretty much everything else in the dish.

The chicken is so-so. It’s a little soggy and quite bland, and the flavorful glaze isn’t enough to make up for that. Also, if you like your noodles al dente, this probably isn’t the dish for you. These are some seriously soft noodles.

To liven up the mix a little bit, there are also roasted red peppers and carrots inside. The peppers are lovely but sparse, and the carrots are nothing special.

This noodle bowl has 330 calories and 850 mg of sodium. While the calorie count is very nice, the sodium level is pretty high, so be careful if you’re trying to cut your sodium intake. This is no slouch in the sodium department.

The Marie Callender’s Sweet & Spicy Chicken & Noodle Bowl is a frozen meal that’s simply alright. It’s decent, but we definitely don’t see ourselves craving this in the future. In fact, if the glaze weren’t so darn good, we don’t think this meal would have been anything but mediocre.
