We love a good curry bowl now and again, and Luvo is a brand that has a few curry bowls that you can find in the freezer aisle of your local grocery store or Target. We’ve recently tried the Great Karma Coconut Curry Power Bowl, and we’ve been itching to try more of these ever since.
Which means we are very excited about today’s meal. Today, we’re trying out the Luvo Thai-Style Green Curry Chicken Bowl.
Cooking this curry bowl is as easy as all get-out — simply pop it in the microwave for about five minutes, then pull it out and let it cool for a bit before digging in. This requires no mid-cook stirring or post-cook additions; it’s about as simple as frozen meals come.
When you pull this out of the microwave, you’ll probably notice that this is not as green as the box might lead you to believe (and not as green as some of the other green curry dishes we’ve tried). In fact, the overall color palette of this dish seems to lean toward orange. That’s because this thing is loaded up with carrots, squash, and red bell peppers. Each of these veggies has a good flavor, as well as a good crunch, so they’re satisfying to chomp.
The chicken is pretty good. It’s not the best chicken we’ve ever had — it’s a pretty standard white meat cut into cubes about the size of dice — but it’s substantially better than a lot of the stuff Luvo’s competitors are using. It has a good flavor, and it doesn’t have a bunch of fat or gristle to lower the quality.
The main event here, of course, is the green curry sauce. It has a bit of that Thai-style sweetness that really makes it stand out. If you’re hoping the “medium spice” promised on the box is one that will send you running for a fire hose, you’ll be disappointed. This has a little bit of that “sinus-clearing” effect, but we definitely feel hesitant about using the word “spicy.”
If you’re watching your calories, this is a meal that comes without a side dish of guilt, as it only has 280 calories (80 from fat). It’s quite low in sodium for a frozen meal as well, with only 290 mg. We’re used to seeing labels with more than double that amount of sodium, so this comes as a welcome surprise.
The Luvo Thai-Style Green Curry Chicken Bowl hits a lot of frozen-food high notes for us. It’s easy to make, it tastes great, and it’s low in calories and sodium. It’s really hard to find frozen food that does all three of these things simultaneously, so this Luvo bowl is a real winner.
