While the items we review here at Freezer Meal Frenzy tend to be frozen meals, we do enjoy picking up some treats from the freezer aisle as well. So it might seem to be slightly out of character for us to review a gelato, but we’ll argue that as long as it’s frozen, it’s right in our wheelhouse.
Now, gelato isn’t just the Italian word for ice cream. Gelato contains more milk and less cream than ice cream does, making it a lot denser. It’s also usually egg-free, giving it a soft and silky texture. Trader Joe’s Caramel Cookie Crunch Gelato is the perfect way for us to indulge in all our gelato cravings.
We’ve long known that Trader Joe’s sells repackaged products, but we’ve never spotted any in the wild until now. This icy treat is clearly Talenti-brand gelato. Specifically, it’s their Caramel Cookie Crunch gelato, which is one of our favorites. We’ve placed it alongside Talenti’s Sea Salt Caramel for comparison.
Gelato is always delicious, but the combination of flavors here makes this hard not to eat in a single sitting. First, you have a basic vanilla ice cream with tiny pieces of an Oreo-like cookie spread throughout. Add in larger chunks of cookie, caramel, and dulce de leche, and you have an amazing blend of flavors.
This is definitely a sugary treat; there are 29 grams of sugar in each serving. In spite of this, the gelato never tastes overly saccharine. There’s nothing here to counter the sweeter flavors, but the creaminess of the gelato keeps those tastes from being overwhelming. If you’ve never tried gelato before, this is a terrific place for you to start.
If you love Talenti gelato, or if you’re simply looking for some tasty new desserts, see if your Trader Joe’s has this product in stock. While we suspect that all of their gelatos are delicious, Trader Joe’s Caramel Cookie Crunch Gelato is a flavor we strongly recommend. If you enjoy caramel, cookies, and foods that taste good, you’ll definitely want to give this a try.
