PF Chang’s Home Menu Orange Chicken Review

PF Chang's Home Menu Orange Chicken

We’re always on the lookout for a good orange chicken here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, but those seem to be few and far between. While we’ve found a few that we really enjoy (the Trader Joe’s Mandarin Orange Chicken is especially good), we’ve been disappointed more often than not.

Today we’re seeing what PF Chang’s has on the menu. Orange chicken seems like something that should be right up their alley, right? Well, we’ve sampled their Sichuan Style Orange Chicken in the past, and we weren’t all that impressed. Today, we’re looking at the PF Chang’s Home Menu Orange Chicken, which designed to be a two-person entree instead of a single-serving dish. Perhaps the larger serving size and change in cooking method will give this a boost that the single-serve version lacked.

This is designed to be cooked in a pan, but the instructions are fairly simple. Altogether, this should take about ten minutes to prepare. (If you want to see the full cooking instructions, check out our package scans at the bottom of this review.)

The chicken has a good consistency — it’s soft, spongey, and moist, which we think is ideal for a chicken that’s soaked in orange sauce. And boy howdy, is this ever soaked! PF Chang’s was not stingy on the sauce here — there’s a ton of it, and the flavor is very potent. It’s a super sweet, super citrusy taste, which we think is pretty alright. However, the chicken itself has a strange aftertaste (one reviewer referred it as “chemical-y”), which blends oddly with the sauce.

There’s no rice here, but you could certainly toss this dish over some fried rice, which we think is a great way to enjoy orange chicken. This does, however, come with some veggies. You’ve got edamame, carrots, and water chestnuts in the mix. All of these end up nice and firm, so the consistency is good, but the flavor is dwarfed by that of the orange sauce. You probably won’t taste the veggies at all through that sauce.

This orange chicken is designed for two people to share, with a little bit left over (a serving is slightly less than half a bag). If you stick to half a bag, you’ll be taking in about 410 calories and 910 mg of sodium. If that’s not bad enough, a full bag will run you 850 calories and a whopping 1,920 mg of sodium. Holy sodium levels, Batman!

The PF Chang’s Home Menu Orange Chicken is better than some of the other orange chicken you’ll find in the freezer aisle, but we’re still not completely sold on it. It just can’t compare with Trader Joe’s Mandarin Orange Chicken, which is our go-to frozen orange chicken.

The chicken is disgusting and rubbery. It’s definitely just a “fancy” chicken nugget. They could atleast use real chicken breast meat.
