Açaí is native to the rainforests of South America. While it’s often referred to as a berry, it’s actually a different type of fruit known as a drupe. No matter what you call it, açaí is packed with nutrients like vitamin A, calcium, and anthocyanins. As the name suggests, Trader Joe’s Organic Açaí Bowl, which we’re reviewing today, uses açaí to great effect.

When you open up the box, you’ll find a bowl of frozen fruity goodness and a small packet of granola, which is designed to be tossed on the bowl when you’re ready to eat. Unlike most frozen foods, this dish doesn’t actually have to be heated at all! You can simply toss it in your refrigerator overnight and let it thaw out. This is one frozen treat you can enjoy even if you don’t have a microwave.

However, since the Freezer Meal Frenzy offices do have a microwave, we opted to thaw it out that way. According to the instructions, it should be heated for 45 seconds, stirred, and then tossed back in the microwave for 15 seconds at a time until the bowl is fully defrosted. After our 45 seconds were up, we gave this bowl two 15-second runs in the microwave. The bowl was still very cold, but it was thawed out, which was good enough for us! From there, all we really needed to do was open up the granola, toss it on, and dig in!

While you could warm this bowl a little more if you prefer, we’d strongly recommend eating it while it’s chilly. The colder temperature makes eating the fruit a really refreshing experience. In addition to the açaí, the bowl is packed with other fruity flavors, like blueberries, strawberries, and banana. The banana is pureed and mixed in with the açaí, which cuts the tartness and makes it easier to eat.

The granola is slightly sweetened, but not overwhelming so; this really feels like a clean, healthy meal made from natural ingredients. The crunch of the granola really complements the pureed fruit. However, the highlight of this dish for us may have actually been the blueberries! They’re plump and flavorful, and they taste like they were freshly tossed into this bowl.

The bowl is a little high in carbs, which means it’s not a great choice for anyone watching their carb intake. However, it contains just 260 calories and it’s packed with fiber, iron, potassium, and other nutrients. We really felt reinvigorated after we polished this off!

Trader Joe’s Organic Açaí Bowl is a delicious fruity meal perfect for anyone that wants to enjoy the benefits of açaí. The preparation instructions are a little unusual, but overall, we found this to be a breeze to prepare. It’s far healthier than your average frozen meal, and it’s a lot tastier too. We’ll definitely be treating ourselves to one of these bowls again!
