Freezer Meal Frenzy started with burrito reviews. While we’ve expanded into many other types of frozen foods since those early days, burritos are still one of our favorites. Since we found the Trader Joe’s Super Burrito! in the refrigerated section of the store, it isn’t technically a frozen food. Still, we couldn’t resist the siren call of a tasty burrito.
Preparing this burrito was more of a hassle than we expected. Since the burrito wasn’t frozen, we assumed heating it up would be a breeze. The problem is the packaging. The burrito is wrapped in paper and secured with a sticker, and it’s hard to get that packaging off without tearing into it like a kid on Christmas morning.
After slowly unwrapping our burrito, we decided to toss it in the microwave. All that hard work had us feeling pretty hungry! It only took about 2 minutes to cook the burrito, but it was steaming hot when it came out of the microwave. Even after it had cooled for a few minutes, it was still pretty hot to the touch.
This burrito is fairly light, but it’s also quite filling. Quinoa is a complete protein, and it’s also loaded with fiber. Although this burrito isn’t massive, it’s more than enough to tide you over until dinner rolls around. Additional ingredients, like the tasty chunks of sweet potato, give the burrito a little more bulk.
No one accustomed to spicy foods will be impressed by the heat-level of this burrito. Still, it does have a little bit of kick to it. There’s a slightly fiery aftertaste that really enhances the flavors here. While we ate this burrito plain, we think it’d be amazing with a spicy salsa verde. Of course, it’d also taste great with something milder, like sour cream.
Trader Joe’s Super Burrito! might be a little bit of a hassle to unwrap, but it’s worth the extra effort. It’s delicious, satiating, and packed with nutrients, including 60% of the daily recommended value of vitamin C. It’s also vegan, which makes it a convenient choice for anyone avoiding animal products.
