Devour Ultimate Sausage & Peppers Pizza Review

Devour Ultimate Sausage & Peppers Pizza

Ah, frozen pizza, the love of our life!

When we found out that Devour, which is one of our favorite frozen food brands, got into the frozen pizza game, we knew right away that we needed to try as much of their offerings as we could find. So far we’ve tasted “The Carnivore” and the Three Way Pepp, and both were delicious yet calorie-packed frozen pizzas. Today we’re going to keep on cruising through this tasty line to see what the Devour Ultimate Sausage & Peppers Pizza is all about.

We don’t really know how Devour got a UFC endorsement on this thing. It’s certainly not the sort of food we could picture a UFC fighter munching down before a fight. But, for whatever reason, this is supposedly the official frozen pizza of the UFC. Cool.

This is easy enough to cook. Simply preheat your oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit, then pop this pizza on a baking sheet and let it cook for about 30 minutes. We gave ours a few extra minutes to see if we could get the crust extra crispy, but that’s not a choice we’d recommend. We ended up browning the cheese a bit too much on one side of the pizza, as you can see in the image below.

But we didn’t ruin this, by any means. Even though we made a bit of a cooking snafu, this pizza is just as tasty as we were hoping it’d be.

Now, this frozen pizza has something that was lacking on the previous two Devour pizzas we tried: veggies. Yes, this thing is loaded up with green bell peppers and onions. Well, the phrase loaded up might be a bit of an exaggeration, but there are veggies on this pizza. The thing about these two specific veggies is that even small quantities of them can really change the overall flavor profile of the pizza. Here, they work really well, adding a nice little zing to the taste.

The sausage on our pizza was a little bit dry, but we blame that on our overcooking. It has a decent flavor, but we would have loved it if the chunks were bigger. We’re used to “Minnesota-style” pizzas, so our preference is for larger pieces of sausage. While that might not be a reasonable request for a pizza made outside of this state, we do think larger sausage balls would have preserved a bit more of the moisture, ending up with a better product despite the extra cook time.

The crust here is really thick. It’s hard to tell from the image above, but this crust is almost an inch thick. We don’t remember the other pizzas in this line having such thick crust, so this came as something of a surprise to us. We do think a thicker crust is definitely the right choice for a sausage-and-peppers pizza.

The package considers a baffling 1/5 of a pizza to be a serving. This is especially strange when you consider that this is shaped like an octagon, which means you’re almost certainly going to be cutting this into eight pieces.

The box’s serving size contains 350 calories (120 from fat) and 800 mg of sodium. That doesn’t sound too bad, but we did some math that is really going to disappoint anyone who’s on a diet. One full pizza contains 1,750 calories (600 from fat) and 4,000 mg of sodium, which means half a pizza contains 875 calories (300 from fat) and 2,000 mg of sodium. This is definitely not something you should eat a lot of.

The Devour Ultimate Sausage & Peppers Pizza is a calorie-loaded powerhouse of a pizza. While you shouldn’t eat this every day (or right before you participate in a UFC fight), it’s great as a special treat every once in a while.
