Trader Joe’s Pollo Asado Burrito Review

Trader Joe's Pollo Asado Burrito

We can’t deny that we’re huge fans of microwavable burritos here at Freezer Meal Frenzy. And even though we specialize in frozen foods, we can’t resist the temptation to check out the refrigerated section at Trader Joe’s to see what sorts of burritos we can find there. Today’s find is the Trader Joe’s Pollo Asado Burrito.

While you can certainly cook this burrito in the oven if you really want to, it’s a cinch to make in the microwave. Simply peel open the packaging, heat it for about a minute, flip the burrito, and give it another 45 to 60 seconds of cook time. The hardest part of the entire process is opening the wrapper. While this tripped us up a bit the last time we tried one of these burritos, this time we grabbed a pair of kitchen scissors and cut the packaging open, which wasn’t difficult at all.

Do be careful, though, as this comes out of the microwave super hot, and we wouldn’t want any of our lovely readers to burn their mouths on this!

The microwave does leave the tortilla a little bit soggy on the bottom, but if you let the burrito cool for a few minutes, the top should dry enough to be pleasant to the touch. The bottom will still be a little bit sticky, though. We think you could possibly mitigate this by flipping the burrito over while it cools, but we unfortunately didn’t think of that until halfway through eating the thing, so we couldn’t try it out.

Like most of the other microwavable burritos on the market, this one is filled mostly with rice and beans, the beans here being black beans rather than refried. Those things are all fine and good, but it’s the other stuff that you’ll really get excited about.

If the corn chili salsa isn’t the reason you’ve picked this thing up in the first place, prepare to have your priorities shifted. This stuff, combined with the pepperjack cheese, creates a flavor profile that’s simply astonishing. It has a creaminess and a slight sweetness that really makes this burrito stand out from the crowd.

The chicken portion here is not extremely generous, but we say Trader Joe’s packed more of it into this burrito than most microwavable options do. Plus, it’s a very high-quality meat — it’s rich, stringy, and juicy. We’re not sure if this is a dark meat or not (the package doesn’t say and we didn’t pull out any of the chicken before we gobbled this down), but it sure tastes like a dark-meat chicken to us.

If you check out the nutrition contents on the package, you might be tempted to think that 300 calories sounds pretty reasonable for this particular burrito. However, if you look closely, you’ll see that this number is for a half burrito, not a full one, which puts the calorie count up to 600. Be careful, folks, this is no lightweight burrito!

The Trader Joe’s Pollo Asado Burrito is an incredible microwavable burrito. You won’t find it in the freezer aisle, though — this bad boy is in the refrigerated section of Trader Joe’s. The next time you’ve got a craving for a microwavable burrito, we’d recommend checking this out. Just be careful about the calories, because this thing is loaded with them.
