Trader Joe’s Black Bean & Jack Cheese Burrito Review

Trader Joe's Black Bean & Jack Cheese Burrito

We love microwavable burritos here at Freezer Meal Frenzy. We love them much, in fact, that we’d eat them every single day if possible, to the horror of our families, friends, and doctors. And that means you’ll quite frequently find us drifting away from the freezer aisle and picking out a burrito that’s not a frozen food, even though Freezer Meal Frenzy is primarily a frozen food review site.

We made yet another one of these drifts to pick up the Trader Joe’s Black Bean & Jack Cheese Burrito. You won’t find this with the other frozen food; it’s in the refrigerated section of Trader Joe’s.

Heating it up is simple enough. Just unwrap it and toss it into the microwave for a minute and a half or two minutes. In the past, we’ve had a little bit of trouble with the unwrapping part of these instructions, but we’ve since learned that you can use a pair of scissors to make it much easier.

We cooked our burrito for two minutes, and it came out a little bit hot, so we let it cool a few minutes before digging in. Once we got this thing cut open, we were pleasantly surprised to see just how loaded it is with black beans, as you can see in the image below.

Now, this is a super simple burrito. In fact, it’s really just black beans and monterey jack cheese rolled into a flour tortilla. However, the flavor combination is excellent. The black beans are of an exceptional quality — they have a great flavor and a soft consistency. The monterey jack cheese just adds a subtle creaminess to the whole thing, which elevates the overall taste and feel of the burrito.

The nutrition info on the back of the package has two columns, one for a half burrito and one for the whole thing. (Spoiler alert: You’re almost certainly going to eat the entire burrito in a sitting.) One burrito contains 650 calories and 1,290 mg of sodium, so you’ll want to be careful about eating this. It’s not a diet food.

The Trader Joe’s Black Bean & Jack Cheese Burrito is about as basic as it gets, but by no means is that a bad thing. In fact, this burrito is fantastic. While you don’t want to eat one of these every day due to the calorie count, it makes for a cravable lunch food that we think you’ll really enjoy. If you like black beans, then you simply must try this burrito.
