Trader Joe’s Family Size Organic Cheese & Tomato Pizza Review

Trader Joe's Family Size Organic Cheese & Tomato Pizza

When you say, “It’s a good day to eat pizza,” you’re pretty much describing every day ever. Pizza is amazing, and we’ll take any excuse we can find to eat more of it — today’s excuse is that we picked up a Trader Joe’s Family Size Organic Cheese & Tomato Pizza.

This ultra-thin pizza is pretty wide, but aside from it’s elongated dimensions it’s pretty easy to make. Simply preheat your oven to 450 degrees fahrenheit, then stick the pizza directly on the oven rack for 12 to 15 minutes. The hard part is finding a place large enough to actually cut this. As you can see in the image below, we had to use two plates to get a good picture of what this looks like uncut.

According to the box, you can cook this an extra minute to make sure it’s especially crispy. However, our pizza only cooked for 12 minutes — the bare minimum recommended by the box instructions — and it came out pretty darn crispy. This pizza had a nice crunch sound whenever we bit into it.

Since this pizza has the word Tomato in the title, you might expect it to have sliced pieces of tomato on top of it, similar to the Trader Joe’s Organic Tomato Mozzarella Piccolo (Little) Pizza. It actually doesn’t. Instead, it uses a tomato-heavy sauce that has a little bit of the sharpness you’d get if you bit into a cherry tomato rather than the subtle sweetness of a marinara-style red sauce.

The cheese here is a blend of mozzarella, provolone, and emmentaler cheeses. It has a little bit more of a sophisticated profile than your average frozen pizza, but it’s also nothing extraordinary. It does it’s job, and we suppose that’s all it was ever asked to do. We’re speaking as true Americans when we say we could have used a little more cheese on this.

Clearly, this is a pretty simple pie. If you’re a fan of complicated pizzas with a variety of creative toppings, this might not be for you — unless you add some of your own toppings, which the box suggests. However, we think this is a better option for those who want a pizza without a lot of bells and whistles: just some cheese and tomato sauce on a nice crispy crust.

A serving size is 1/4 a pizza, which is pretty reasonable. (The image above shows what that looks like.) If you have a family of four, that means this is truly a family-size pizza, as the box proclaims. If you stick with that serving size, you’ll end up chowing down 340 calories and 470 mg of sodium. That’s not too bad, but we definitely think it’s feasible — it’s pretty darn easy, in fact — to eat half a pizza in a sitting, which makes those numbers look a lot less enticing.

The Trader Joe’s Family Size Organic Cheese & Tomato Pizza is a pretty decent pizza that’s too large for a reasonable person to eat in a sitting. If you’re looking for a simple meal and you have a friend (or three) to share this with, it’s a pretty good option. If you want something more complicated, however, you’re probably better off getting something a bit edgier (like the Pizza Parlanno).
