The Freezer Meal Frenzy staff loves Devour’s frozen meals, so whenever we discover an item from their line that we haven’t tried yet, we try to review it as soon as we can. We recently found the Devour Smokehouse Meat & Potatoes with Chicken, Sausage & Bacon at our local grocery store, and we’re quite excited to try it out.
Based on the hearty plate of meat shown on the package, we were actually expecting a fairly long cook time for this frozen meal. We were surprised to find that this only takes about four and a half minutes to cook in the microwave. That’s not bad, but it also suggests that this meal is substantially smaller than the one pictured on the box. And that ends up being the case; as you can see in the picture below, this isn’t a huge meal.
This really isn’t a complex dish. As the name implies, this is really just a tray filled with meat and potatoes that have been slathered with a smoky barbeque sauce.
The chicken is heavenly. It’s juicy and flavorful, and the top of the meat is covered with grill lines. We’re not sure if those are authentic grill lines or if they’re painted on, but the smoky flavor suggests an actual grill. The chunks of chicken are also pretty reasonably sized.
The sausage here is not what we were expecting. Instead of the balls of ground sausage you would expect to find on a pizza (or in a lasagna), these are more like slices of bratwurst. These slices have a delicious, spicy flavor that’s really enjoyable to eat. The only downside is that there just isn’t enough of this stuff. We only found two slices in our entire meal, which isn’t nearly enough to leave us feeling satisfied.
The bacon is ground up into bits, and it’s not all that exciting. We would have loved to have had some gristly chunks in here, but this is gravely and has a little bit of a rubbery consistency. We would have gladly traded all of the bacon for more of that wonderful sausage.
A good portion of this dish is potatoes — in fact, we’d estimate that almost half the dish is chunks of potato. Now, that makes this a little heartier — in fact, this is pretty filling for its size — but that fact skews the balance of the dish toward the potatoes. This is maybe just a little bit too much potato.
You’ll also find a few kernels of corn in the mix, which are a nice little treat. The portion size is scant, but we found it worth mentioning simply because the quality is surprisingly high for frozen corn.
Of course, it’s the smokehouse barbeque sauce that seals this deal of a meal. This stuff tastes absolutely incredible. It’s tangy and sweet, with a bit of a smoky aftertaste that really drives it home. If you just catch a whiff of this stuff, your soul will be transported to another realm.
Devour certainly isn’t known for making diet-friendly frozen food. This meal isn’t quite as bad as some of Devour’s other meals, but 440 calories is still pushing it, and 1,160 mg of sodium is quite a lot. If you’re trying to cut calories or reduce your sodium intake, this is a meal you’ll want to avoid.
The Devour Smokehouse Meat & Potatoes with Chicken, Sausage & Bacon is absolutely lovely for people who enjoy eating meat. We aren’t huge fans of the bacon here, but the rest of this dish is made using exceptionally high-quality ingredients. This is obviously not made for vegetarians, but meat eaters should enjoy it immensely. This is another winner from the folks at Devour.
