Archer Farms Pesto Chicken Traditional Crust Pizza Review

Archer Farms Pesto Chicken Traditional Crust Pizza

If you’ve ever explored the freezer aisle at your local Target, you’ve probably found an overwhelming amount of frozen food there — especially if it’s a Super Target. One of the things you’ll see quite a bit of is Archer Farms, which is a Target-exclusive brand. We’ve been testing out various frozen foods in the Archer Farms line, from frozen desserts to appetizers to frozen pizza.

Today, we’re digging even deeper into this line to check out the Archer Farms Pesto Chicken Traditional Crust Pizza, which one of our staffers referred to as “pretty.” (This has a lovely assortment of Christmas colors, so we suppose “pretty” is a fair assessment of this pizza’s aesthetics.)

The instructions say to bake this for 15 to 17 minutes (you can read the full cooking instructions by checking out our package scans at the bottom of this review). We left ours in for the full 17, and we think the crust turned out just a little too crispy for our personal tastes. Even the bottom of the pizza, which is usually a little soft, had a crisp to it. If you like your pizza extra crispy, keep this in mind.

The box says this is hand-stretched crust, and we’re not sure we believe this. Does Archer Farms have a warehouse somewhere that houses an army of crust-stretchers? We’re not sure, but the crust does have a nice flavor and consistency.

This doesn’t have a traditional red sauce. Instead, it uses a pesto sauce, though it decorates the top with tomato chunks to satisfy people who can’t imagine a pizza without some sort of tomato portion. It’s a more subtle, savory choice than a tomato sauce, and it works quite well here. The tomatoes add just the right pop of acidic sweetness to bring the whole thing together.

The chicken is a blend of breast meat and rib meat, and it’s actually pretty good. It has more flavor that we were expecting, and it’s a really lovely complement to the pesto sauce. However, it is a little bit dry, but that might be partially due to the fact that we overcooked this just a little bit.

According to the box, one third of the pizza is a serving. While that’s an odd serving size (we think a half is much more feasible), it’s a large enough portion that we’ll give Archer Farms a pass here. If you stick to that particular portion size, you’ll be consuming 340 calories (140 from fat), but you probably also won’t be all that full. This really isn’t a filling pizza.

The Archer Farms Pesto Chicken Traditional Crust Pizza isn’t our favorite pizza in Target’s freezer aisle, but it’s still a pretty lovely pie. It may have the word Traditional in the title, but this isn’t exactly your traditional pizza. It’s not totally wild, but it’s slightly unusual, and that’s enough to give it some charm.
