We often find ourselves marveling at the creativity of the folks at Jimmy Dean. Sure, their breakfast sandwiches are pretty basic (some of them are still quite good), but they also make some breakfast treats that we never would have thought of. The Stuffed Hashbrowns, for instance, take several common breakfast ingredients and stuff them inside a hash-browned shell. We’ve checked out the bacon and veggies version of this breakfast food before, but today we’re reviewing the Jimmy Dean Sausage & Cheese Stuffed Hashbrowns.
These are pretty easy to prepare, though they aren’t quite take-and-bake. Each hash-brown shell comes with its own crisping sleeve, which you’ll insert the breakfast into before heating.
While they call this a “crisping sleeve,” it doesn’t exactly make the thing crispy — except for the very, very outside of the shell. However, it does make it slightly less soggy than the usual microwaved breakfast, so we guess the sleeve does it’s job here.
Inside the shell you’ll find balls of sausage. They’re a little bit chewy, but otherwise they’re pretty good. They have a ton of flavor, though the “snappiness” that defines a good breakfast sausage is a little bit muted.
The cheddar cheese is what really completes these, though. It has a little bit of a fake “Easy Cheese” flavor to it, but it combines with the hash browns and the sausage in a satisfying way. The combo would be half as good without the cheese.
We’re told there are potatoes inside, but we didn’t find any. It’s possible we just got a bad batch, and it’s also possible that we didn’t notice the potatoes in the filling because the hash-brown shell is basically pure potato.
One stuffed hashbrown contains 300 calories (170 from fat) and 740 mg of sodium. That’s really not all that bad if you can stick to just one hashbrown pocket. We’re not sure you will, though. It’s not a ton of food, and if you’re the type who needs a bigger breakfast, one pocket certainly won’t satisfy you. Each one is smaller than a dish sponge.
The Jimmy Dean Sausage & Cheese Stuffed Hashbrowns are a pretty tasty way to start your day. If you asked us which version we prefer, we’d definitely take this one over the bacon and veggie version, though that’s mainly because the cheese works so much better here. We definitely wish these were a little bigger, though — and a bit more filling.
