Trader Joe’s Joe-Joe’s Cookies & Cream Light Ice Cream Review

Trader Joe's Joe-Joe's Cookies & Cream Light Ice Cream

If you’re looking to indulge in some frozen treat-eating, but you can’t really spare the calories, you might have to make a sacrifice. Unless, of course, you find a lightweight dessert that will satisfy a sweet tooth without loading you up with calories. This is what the Trader Joe’s Joe-Joe’s Cookies & Cream Light Ice Cream attempts to do. The packaging boasts that this ice cream contains 80% less fat and 56% fewer calories than regular cookies and cream ice cream. That sounds like a dream come true, right?

Well, unfortunately, it doesn’t work out as well as we’d hoped. This ice cream is a bit disappointing.

The problems start with the texture. This has a weird “frozen foam” texture to it that is really unappealing. This doesn’t feel like ice cream in your mouth.

Additionally, this really doesn’t have much flavor. Now, we’ve had other Trader Joe’s products that contain vanilla ice cream (such as the Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches and the Neapolitan Joe-Joe’s Ice Cream), and it tends to be creamy, rich, and sweet. It’s really good. But the ice cream here has none of those qualities — it’s not creamy at all, it’s bland, and the sweetness is really just an aftertaste.

The cookies part here is the classic Joe-Joe’s, which are usually pretty decent. Here, though, they seem like they’re ground up so small that they don’t really have any impact on the flavor. It would be nice to stumble on a decent-sized chunk of cookie in this ocean of blandness, but alas, it is not meant to be.

We feel like if you eat this ice cream, you’ll probably be so disappointed that you’ll end up going out and buying some real-deal ice cream, just to wash the sad memories out of your head. Which makes this even worse than a diet ice cream — it’s a diet ice cream that creates an overwhelming craving for real ice cream.

Trader Joe’s does make good on their low-calorie promise. One serving of this (slightly less than 1/3 of the carton) contains a meager 100 calories., and the whole shebang only has 310. That’s definitely not bad.

The Trader Joe’s Joe-Joe’s Cookies & Cream Light Ice Cream may be light on calories, but it’s even lighter on flavor. We wish we could recommend this to our calorie-counting friends, but we really can’t. If you’re craving ice cream, we don’t think this is enough to satisfy you.
