Trader Joe’s Pimento Cheese Puffs Review

Trader Joe's Pimento Cheese Puffs

Trader Joe’s has been on a roll with their appetizers! It seems like just yesterday when we were just trying out the Hold the Corn! Appetizers and the Crispy Rice Salmon Bites, but we suppose it’s actually been a couple months now. Where does the time go?

Today we’re digging deeper into TJ’s appetizer line with the Trader Joe’s Pimento Cheese Puffs. While our vegetarian staffers were licking their chops over these, we had to remind them that these are not actually vegetarian-friendly, as they feature bacon. While this made our veggie staffers frown, our more carnivorous staffers had wolflike grins when we realized these wouldn’t have to be shared with the vegetarians in the office!

These cheese puffs are simple enough to cook. Simply preheat your oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit, put the cheese puffs on a lined baking sheet, then pop them in the oven for 12 to 14 minutes. We can confirm that they smell absolutely wonderful when they cook. You’ll really want to jump the gun and pull them out before they’re ready, but don’t do that! You’ll ruin them!

Trader Joe's Pimento Cheese Puffs

One package contains a dozen cheese bites, and if you open wide you should be able to fit one into your mouth in a single bite.

Now, they may not be gigantic in size, but they’re huge in flavor. Seriously, these are incredibly rich and very delicious. What you have here is a simple pastry topped with a dab of cheese and a mash of bacon and onion that’s sweetened with maple syrup and brown sugar. Each bite is a wild ride from start to finish.

The pastry portions are delectably crisp and fluffy, while the savory bacon and onion mash contrasts with the sweetness in a way that’s purely irresistible. Then there’s the cheese blend — a cream cheese and cheddar mix with some pimento peppers tossed in for good measure — to give the overall flavor profile a nice kick in the pants.

Spicy wouldn’t be the first word we’d use to describe these, but they do have a tingly spiciness to them that’s hard to ignore. We’re really not sure if spice-ophobes will be willing to try these or not — we think these puffs are perfectly fine for those who would shy away from other spicy foods, but some folks who are incredibly sensitive might disagree with us.

The package considers four of these to be a serving, which is probably fair since they’re designed to be an appetizer. If you stick to that amount, you’ll be downing 330 calories and 370 mg of sodium. If you decide to make a meal of these and gulp down the whole box, you’re looking at 990 calories and 1,120 mg of sodium. We’ll say this again: these are designed to be an appetizer. Don’t go overboard!

The Trader Joe’s Pimento Cheese Puffs are absolutely delicious. If you spot these at your local Trader Joe’s, we highly recommend them for small gatherings — or just for yourself, if you really want to indulge!
