Trader Joe’s Chicken Breast Medallions with Coconut Red Curry Sauce Review

Trader Joe's Chicken Breast Medallions with Coconut Red Curry Sauce

While Freezer Meal Frenzy focuses primarily on frozen food reviews, we do occasionally swing by other sections of the grocery store to see what’s happening over there. For example, we’ve discovered some incredible refrigerated meals at our local Trader Joe’s, such as the Chicken Enchiladas Verde and the Black Bean & Jack Cheese Burrito. Since these meals have proven themselves to be such lovely treasures, we feel quite justified in our refrigerator-aisle wanderings.

So today we’re going to review yet another meal from the Trader Joe’s chilled foods section, the Trader Joe’s Chicken Breast Medallions with Coconut Red Curry Sauce. When we took these to the register, the cashier told us this was probably the best meal in that entire section of the store. We’re prepared for a real treat.

We were actually planning to cook this in the oven, but we discovered this was not an option. The package lists cooking instructions for the microwave or stovetop, and we actually thought the microwave seemed like the better option here. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions for both methods, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

We sort of expected more medallion-y medallions here, but the chicken actually comes in plump chunks. Our batch had one gigantic chunk with several smaller pieces surrounding it. The chicken has a lovely consistency — moist but not soggy — though it doesn’t have a ton of flavor on its own. That doesn’t really matter, though, because it’s the sauce that’s important here.

The sauce is a sweet, creamy coconut curry rather than a spicy curry, and we have to say that it’s absolutely phenomenal. This is one seriously craveable sauce, and we’d buy a whole jar of it if we could. Plus, the serving size is quite generous here — there’s more than enough to cover your chicken and then some. In fact, our chicken was practically swimming in the stuff. After our chicken was gone, we were left with about half a cup of curry soup, which we slurped down because it would have been an absolute shame to waste any of this stuff.

Now, we just ate our chicken medallions straight out of the bag, but we think this would be really good if served over some basmati rice (which is not included here). This was clearly designed to be part of a broader meal — the excess of sauce is evidence of this.

This is no low-calorie meal. Sure, the package says a serving has only 150 calories, but there are supposedly four servings here. That means if you eat the full package at once, like we did, you’re consuming 600 calories. That’s definitely less sexy than that cool, slim 150.

The Trader Joe’s Chicken Breast Medallions with Coconut Red Curry Sauce are easy to prepare, but more importantly, they’re absolutely delicious. We’re not sure if these are the very best item in the Trader Joe’s refrigerated section, but they’re certainly among the standouts. Just remember that if you pick these up you should also grab a bag of basmati rice to serve it with.

It is a very tasty dinner and extremely easty to heat up. Why has it been discontinued? It’s quite disappointing. Please reinstate chicken breast medallion with coconut red curry sauce once again!

I agree. We had this in regular rotation at our house and really enjoyed it. The medallions were very good quality (although they had to be cut apart even after heating) and the coconut curry sauce was superb. If this item was discontinued because of pricing issues, I think most of its fans would have been willing to pay an extra dollar or two for it to be kept available.

This was one of our favorite meals from Trader Joes.
We were told it had been discontinued from the store because of numerous complaints about it not being healthy enough.
I am dumb founded because that should remain a personal choice of each individual consumer. We loved this meal and probably had it almost on a weekly basis.
I am considering not shopping at Traders Joes in the future because this product has bee discontinued.

I was told by a cashier at Trader Joe’s the dish was discontinued. Sad, I really liked it.
