Totino’s American Favorites Mini Snack Mix Review

Totino's American Favorites Mini Snack Mix

We’re pretty sure Totino’s is mostly known for their pizza rolls and their super-cheap rectangular pizzas. So we were absolutely blown away when we stumbled upon the Totino’s American Favorites Mini Snack Mix. This is a bag with four different types of snack food inside: Potato Bites, Cheddar Bites, Ham & Cheese Bites, and Cheeseburger Flavor Pizza Rolls. Now, we’re not sure any of these really justify the phrase “American Favorites,” but we’re excited to try them all nonetheless.

All the snacks come mixed together in one giant bag (which claims to hold 90 pieces). The various types of snack food aren’t sorted into compartments or anything; this is just one giant jumble of snack bites.

So in order to cook these, you’ll just dump a whole bunch onto a baking sheet and pop it into the oven. There aren’t separate cooking instructions for each type of snack; you can heat a whole mess of these suckers at once. The Potato Bites are the round, flat pieces that look like hash brown patties. If you’ve ever been to a Taco John’s, these are basically Potato Olés, but those who have not been initiated into the Taco John’s club can simply call them flat tater tots. They taste a bit generic, almost like they’re made from instant potatoes instead of fresh ones. They’re lightly seasoned, but they’re definitely better with a topping of some kind. Ketchup or sour cream would work wonders here.

The Cheddar Bites are little balls of deep-fried, breaded cheddar. Unfortunately, when you cook these, the cheese spills out and sticks to the tray, leaving you with mostly hollow balls of deep-fried breading. When we managed to get a piece that actually had cheese inside, we enjoyed these quite a bit, though we admit that was a rare occasion in this batch.

The Ham & Cheese Bites look like pizza rolls, only they’re elongated and ribbed. These actually retain their cheese a lot better than the Cheddar Bites do, and that makes them the better option of the two. They taste a little bit like mini ham and cheese sandwiches, only with a pizza roll shell. They’re pretty good.

Of course. we were really curious to check out the Cheeseburger Flavor Pizza Rolls. Apparently, Totino’s does sell these outside of this particular mix, but we’ve actually never seen them anywhere. These are definitely the best part of this mix. The flavor profile isn’t what we were expecting at all. We thought these would be pretty close to Totino’s other pizza rolls, with some sauce, tiny chunks of cheese, and a little bit of meat. Instead, these come with some ground beef, a bit of a ketchup-y tomato purée, and some pickle juice. They don’t really taste like burgers, but they have way more of a burger-y vibe than we were expecting. These little bites are smaller than regular-sized pizza rolls, so we’re really interested in trying a full bag of these sometime.

The nutritional content doesn’t seem all that bad until you realize that the image above shows about three full servings, based on the bag’s recommendation. One serving (or about 1/7 of a bag) contains about 210 calories and 440 mg of sodium, which means the plate shown above holds something like 630 calories and 1,320 mg of sodium. Watch yourself; it’s easy to get carried away with a plate of bite-sized snacks like this.

The Totino’s American Favorites Mini Snack Mix is a massive helping of some pretty decent snacks. The Cheeseburger Flavor Pizza Rolls are the star of the show here, and we could have done without the Potato Bites (or some better Potato Bites). As is, this would make for a decent batch of snack food to bust out at a party.
