Evol Paleo Friendly Unwrapped Chicken Egg Roll Bowl Review

Evol Paleo Friendly Unwrapped Chicken Egg Roll Bowl

What is an egg roll without the wrap? That’s a question that the Evol Paleo Friendly Unwrapped Chicken Egg Roll Bowl attempts to answer. This dish promises plenty of egg roll goodness in a rice bowl instead of all rolled up in a shell. So we’re going to dig in and see how this tastes.

But first, of course, we must cook it. Thankfully, that’s a cinch. You just pop this into the microwave, give it a quick stir, and pop it back in. It’s no more difficult than your average Lean Cuisine frozen meal. (You can read the full cooking instructions straight off the box by checking out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

We should point out right away that this is a bit too cabbagey for us. Now, there actually isn’t any cabbage here — what we were tasting was actually brussels sprouts. The flavor is kind of overwhelming. It smells like cabbage while it’s cooking, and every bite is infused with the cabbagey flavor of cooked brussel sprouts. We understand that this is an attempt to sot of replicate the cabbagey flavor of egg roll filling, but without the shell to balance things out, that flavor combo does’t really work for us.

If you can get past that, however, this meal is actually pretty good.

The chicken is the real star of the show. This stuff is excellent, with a lovely consistency and a wonderful grilled taste. Evol tends to really knock it out of the park with their chicken, and this bowl is no exception.

The sauce is quite good as well. It’s primarily honey and vinegar, so it has some sweetness with a wicked little bite. Of course, the brussel sprouts do foul up this mix a bit, but the flavor of the sauce does prevail here.

There’s also a pretty good helping of carrots, as well as a bunch of rice. Neither is anything special on their own, but when mixed with the sauce, they end up tasting pretty great.

While this dish only has 280 calories, it’s also loaded with sodium. With 1,030 mg of sodium, this bowl isn’t messing around. Dieters will surely enjoy the low calorie count, but those looking to reduce their sodium levels are going to be a bit disappointed. This is a ton of sodium.

The Evol Paleo Friendly Unwrapped Chicken Egg Roll Bowl is a competent dish that’s a little bit too cabbagey for our personal tastes. Of course, we still think there’s a lot to love about this dish. We’d just love to try it with a reduced brussels sprouts portion.
