Pizza rolls may not be a gourmet food, but they’re still a treat that Freezer Meal Frenzy staffers have a hard time resisting. That’s why we were excited to see that Morningstar Farms had a vegan version of this classic snack. With the Morningstar Farms Veggitizers Veggie Pepperoni Pizza Bites, we can indulge our pizza roll cravings while avoiding animal products.
While it’s possible to heat these bites in the microwave, we opted to follow the oven instructions instead. If you use this method, your pizza rolls will be ready to eat in around 15 minutes. We’d recommend covering your pan with tinfoil before tossing them in the oven; that makes it easier to flip the rolls over halfway through the cooking process. If you have an air fryer on hand, you can also use that to prepare crisp and tasty pizza bites.
The first thing we noticed about these bites was the breading. While traditional pizza rolls usually consist of pizza filling wrapped in dough, these bites have a much crispier coating. It’s actually very similar to the breading used on the Morningstar Farms Chik’n Nuggets. It took us a minute to adjust, but we wound up really enjoying the breading. The crispy coating pairs perfectly with the gooey pizza filling.
Meat and cheese substitutes can be hit or miss, but we think the filling here is pretty similar to what you would find in a normal pizza roll. The cheese has a great gooey texture, and the faux pepperoni has just a hint of spiciness. The filling doesn’t contain much sauce, which isn’t a problem for us. However, if you prefer a saucier pizza bite, you might want to try dipping this in marinara sauce.
The Morningstar Farms Veggitizers Veggie Pepperoni Pizza Bites are a great vegan treat. They don’t taste exactly like normal pizza rolls, but they’re definitely close enough to curb any cravings. Just make sure you pay attention to what you’re eating. If you’re not careful, you could easily devour an entire bag on your own.
