Dairy can be an issue for some of Freezer Meal Frenzy’s staffers, which is why we’re always on the lookout for dairy-free products. We’ve found some great products, like the delicious Trader Joe’s Vegan Mac, but other products left us less than impressed. Because of this, we were slightly apprehensive of the Trader Joe’s Vanilla Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert, but we were eager to try it all the same.
We’ve had the occasional issue opening jars of Talenti gelato, but the lid of this carton pops right open with minimal effort. The ice cream isn’t runny, but it is on the softer side, which means you won’t have to let it thaw out. It should be noted that this is a plain, bare-bones vanilla ice cream. If that’s not your thing, you’re probably going to want to have some toppings ready before you dig in.
We’ve run into texture issues with some vegan products in the past, but this frozen treat has a texture that’s virtually identical to real ice cream. You could easily pass this off as a regular pint of the real thing. That said, the flavor is a little different from a standard vanilla ice cream.
This is made with an almond beverage, and that flavor comes through in every bite. Personally, we like the combination of almond and vanilla beans, but that blend might not work for everyone. It’s sweet, but not too sweet. It’s delicious enough to eat plain, but the flavor is mild enough to complement any sort of ice cream topping. Whether you enjoy this on its own, with fudge, or with fresh fruit, you’re in for a treat.
The Trader Joe’s Vanilla Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert is a fantastic vegan version of your basic vanilla ice cream. We really enjoy the vanilla/almond flavor, and the texture is absolutely perfect. If you’re looking for a basic ice cream that’s free of dairy products, this is one of the best options on the market right now.
