When we first started reviewing LaunchBox frozen sandwiches, we didn’t realize they were pretty much made for kids. Of course, that didn’t stop our adult staffers at Freezer Meal Frenzy from embarking on a mission to try all of them.
And here we are, at the end of this fairly short road. We’ve reviewed the three other flavors of LaunchBox sandwiches, and the last holdout is the LaunchBox Slammin’ Ham & Colby version. We’re reviewing this one today, bringing the era of LaunchBox reviews to an end — at least until LaunchBox updates their lineup.
Like the other sandwiches in this line, each Slammin’ Ham & Colby sandwich comes individually wrapped in a package that’s so bright and colorful that you might mistake it for a packet of fruit snacks at a glance.
These are designed to go in a lunchbox, with the assumption that they’ll thaw out over the course of the next few hours. The package recommends thawing for about three hours, though this is going to depend on the temperature of your lunchbox. At room temperature, three hours might be enough time (or at least close to enough time); in a refrigerator or any cool space, though, three hours won’t be enough time.
These aren’t complex sandwiches. They’re just a thick piece of ham and a slice of colby jack cheese pressed between two pieces of wheat bread (though the wheat bread tastes more like a white bread to us).
The bread is a little bit stale, but the overall flavor of the sandwich is halfway decent. The colby jack is a good choice for cheese here, and the ham is thick enough that it has some firmness to it, making it satisfying to sink your teeth into. Like the other sandwiches in this line, these are a little plain, but they’re better if you add a little bit of mayo.
One sandwich only contains about 120 calories, but keep in mind that one of these sandwiches is about a quarter of the size of an actual sandwich. They’re not big, and they’re not filling.
The LaunchBox Slammin’ Ham & Colby sandwiches are hardly perfect, but they’ll do in a pinch. They’re not super filling and the bread is a little stale, but if you can get past these quibbles, you’ve got a decent bit of food to toss into a lunchbox.
