Trader Joe’s Steamed Pork & Ginger Soup Dumplings Review

Trader Joe's Steamed Pork & Ginger Soup Dumplings

It was a cold morning when we looked into the freezer and remembered that we’d picked up the Trader Joe’s Steamed Pork & Ginger Soup Dumplings, and cold mornings seem to be the perfect time to enjoy these. We should point out that we tried the chicken version of these a while back, and we really loved them. So we’re pretty excited to warm our bellies with the pork and ginger version today.

You can heat these on the stovetop if you have a steamer basket, but like the previous batch of these we reviewed, we just heated these in the microwave. It’s fast and easy. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

There are six dumplings inside the box, and they come inside a little tray. Once you heat them up, you can scoop them out, one at a time, using a spoon.

When you bite into one of these, a heavily ginger-infused soup broth shoots into your mouth. It’s absolutely wonderful, and it’s much more gingery than we expected. The initial flavor heavily leans toward the ginger, but that sort of fades into the soup broth as you chew. Of course, that ginger flavor never really goes away, and it will linger in your mouth after you’ve finished eating a dumpling.

The pork is alright, though it has a sort of gravelly texture that we didn’t care for. It’s not terrible, but if it were just a little softer, we think these dumplings would be absolutely perfect. As is, they’re only close to perfect, but not quite there.

A serving size is a full box, which contains 270 calories and 560 mg of sodium. Neither of those numbers is bad, but we really don’t think you’re going to fill up on these — they’re more of a snack than a meal.

The Trader Joe’s Steamed Pork & Ginger Soup Dumplings are a wonderful treat that’s great to eat on a cold morning. We didn’t care for the texture of the meat so much, but that’s really just a minor quibble. These taste fantastic.
