Healthy Choice Be’f & Vegetable Stir Fry Power Bowl Review

Healthy Choice Be'f & Vegetable Stir Fry Power Bowl

If you’re a regular reader of Freezer Meal Frenzy, you might be aware that we have some bad blood with Healthy Choice. We used to review their meals frequently, but we stopped doing that after one of them started on fire in our microwave. No, we’re not kidding, we have pictures to verify that this did indeed happen.

So we quit reviewing their food for a good long while. We’ve slowly been approaching the brand again with caution, as we initially wanted to see what their frozen wraps were all about, then we started getting curious about their other new items.

Today is a landmark day for both Freezer Meal Frenzy and Healthy Choice, as we’re reviewing the Healthy Choice Be’f & Vegetable Stir Fry Power Bowl. We were skeptical to get back into the Power Bowls specifically (because of the fire), but this one contains faux beef provided by Gardein. Since we also review Gardein products, and we typically enjoy them, we figured that the partnership between Gardein and Healthy Choice was worth looking into.

So here we go. We crossed our fingers, popped the meal into the microwave, and watched this very closely to make sure there were no fires this time. We’re happy to report that this didn’t end up being another fire hazard for us.

Gardein’s vegan-friendly-and-oddly-named Be’f is the highlight of this dish for sure. It definitely doesn’t have the texture or consistency — or even the flavor — of real beef , but it still tastes pretty good. It’s actually a little bit mushy, but not enough to ruin it completely.

Our second-favorite part is the sugar snap peas. They have a lovely crunch to them and they’re rich with flavor, so we’re definitely fans. We do think the edges end up kind of stiff, which makes them hard to chew, so they do lose some points in our book for that.

Aside from that, you’ve got a multigrain mix, which includes brown rice, red rice, quinoa, and black barley, and some carrots and broccoli. All of this is flavored with a sweet sesame soy sauce. This sauce seems to really go well with the faux beef, but we’re less impressed with how it goes with the multigrain blend. It’s an okay sauce, but not a great one.

This is not a bad option for dieters, with just 290 calories and 460 mg of sodium. Both of those numbers are lower than average for a frozen meal, so that’s good to see here.

The Healthy Choice Be’f & Vegetable Stir Fry Power Bowl didn’t start a fire, so that’s a point in its favor. There’s really nothing about it that got us excited, with the exception of the Gardein Be’f. The rest of the meal is really just okay, but it’s hard to argue with that calorie count, we suppose.

had the italian chicken sausage & peppers. Did not say spicy on box but it was very spicy and not enjoyable. Why food companies and restaurants think we all want hot and spicy is beyond me.

I just bought the Zero beef and broccoli. After only three minutes in the microwave (it called for 5-7 minutes), it was over cooked, dried out and disgusting!! I was looking forward to a quick, easy lunch on New Year’s day and this disgusting mess was what I got. The paper bowls may be eco friendly, but they absorb all the liquid, leaving a dry, overcooked pile of garbage. A total waste of 5.00, but a lesson learned.
