The Healthy Choice brand was on probation for a good long while here at Freezer Meal Frenzy. You see, one of their Power Bowls started a fire in our microwave, and it turns out this wasn’t an isolated incident. We’ve been a bit hesitant to review more of their frozen food ever since.
We’ve slowly been getting back into the Healthy Choice line, though with a reasonable amount of caution. We have to admit that we’re a little nervous to dig into the Healthy Choice Meatless Chipotle Chick’n Power Bowl today, but we’re going to hoist up our britches and get to it anyway. Our readers deserve to know what this frozen meal is all about!
This is easy enough to heat up. Simply pop it into the microwave for four to five minutes and it’s done. Just make sure you watch it closely in case you notice any smoke or anything. Also, let it cool for a minute or two before eating.
The good news is that our meal didn’t start on fire. The bad news is that it kind of smelled like hot tires. The even worse news is that it tastes a lot like it smells.
So, there’s some decent stuff in this bowl — the Gardein chick’n is the standout. But something went horribly wrong with the sauce so the whole meal just tastes plain weird. We really wish this weren’t so, because everything else in this dish seems perfectly fine.
Texture-wise, there’s a lot to love here. The quinoa and rice blend is lovely to eat if you can hold your nose and reduce that awful rubbery taste. The Gardein chick’n, which we mentioned earlier, is not a convincing replacement for real chicken, but as a vegan-friendly alternative, it does its job nicely. In fact, this dish even has a vague spiciness to it.
It’s just a shame that it has that weird taste.
This bowl contains 280 calories, making it an appropriate diet food. Plus, at 510 mg of sodium, this has less sodium than your average frozen meal. So that’s pretty cool.
Still, the Healthy Choice Meatless Chipotle Chick’n Power Bowl just tastes plain weird. We really wish it didn’t have that rubbery taste, because we think we really would have liked this otherwise. This is an example of a dish that does almost everything right, yet gets one detail wrong enough that it ruins the entire thing. It really is too bad.
